Cainnt mo Mhàthar Exhibit

Over the past year, Comhairle na Gàidhlig has developed an exhibit showcasing recordings and information from the Cainnt mo Mhàthar project. The Cainnt mo Mhàthar project is an online archive of first-language speakers of Gaelic from Nova Scotia.

This project was created by Comhairle na Gàidhlig in collaboration with the Highland Village Museum. The goal of the project was to record these speakers for the purposes of creating materials for use in Gaelic language instruction. This display has integrated some of these recordings to help teach the public about Gaelic language, culture and history.

Beinn Mhàbu Funding Announcement

June 18, 2021 · Mabou, Nova Scotia · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

Nova Scotia’s Gaelic communities contribute to the province’s diversity, identity and rich cultural experiences. Helping the Gaelic College (Colaisde na Gàidhlig) in St. Ann’s expand its programming to Mabou will foster educational and cultural opportunities in Cape Breton, attract more people to the community, and help grow the local economy.

On June 18, 2021 Mike Kelloway, Member of Parliament for Cape Breton-Canso announced $958,257 to the Gaelic College Foundation to renovate the former St. Joseph’s Convent and Renewal Centre into a satellite campus which will be called Beinn Mhàbu (Mabou Hill College).

The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA.

The refreshed facility will offer post-secondary students Gaelic culture and event management courses in collaboration with Colaisde na Gàidhlig and Cape Breton University. It is expected to draw local, national and international students, creating year-round employment and attracting investment. From May to August, the campus will also provide accommodations for seasonal staff in Mabou and Inverness County.

Funding for strategic projects like this one demonstrates the Government of Canada’s commitment to help businesses in rural areas innovate, grow and reach new markets – strengthening communities, and building a more resilient, inclusive economy.

Bradan Press announces a call for submissions to a new collection of Nova Scotia Gaelic poetry, Òr a Mhaireas / Lasting Gold to be published in Spring 2022.

The Gaelic Song Education Project

Are you a Gaelic educator who uses, or would like to use, songs as part of your teaching practice?

Language in Lyrics is launching a new project to further integrate Gaelic songs into the community learning process. We are inviting Gaelic language instructors to join us in creating lesson plans organized around Gaelic songs.

Teachers will be paid for these lesson plans and they will be made publicly available under a creative commons license. You will receive professional development sessions to help you prepare for the lesson planning.

The first three virtual professional development sessions are scheduled for Mondays, June 14th, 21st, and 28th, from 4:00-5:30pm (ADT). Sessions will include group discussions, overcoming fears around singing, and resources to support your lesson plan development.

Tobar an Dualchais

This three-day online course offers anyone with an interest in Scotland’s unique cultural heritage – including visual artists, writers, musicians, budding-folklorists and creative educators – an opportunity to learn more about the online resource, why the material was collected and by whom, and how and why it is of value today.

Participants will be introduced to some of the many important tradition bearers whose recordings populate the archives and be given the tools to explore the material with greater efficiency and understanding.

The course will be in English but will discuss themes intrinsically linked to Gaelic, Scots and English, including examples of local dialects preserved in some of the recordings.

The course will be delivered by leading scholars and creative practitioners who have extensive experience with the material, including Dr Mairi McFadyen, Raghnaid Sandilands who will help participants explore the potential of the online resource through various lenses, including local creativity, cultural ecology and environmental awareness.
