Remaining Present: A Summer Solstice Message
During the month of June we have recognized PTSD Awareness, LGBTQIA Pride Month, and Juneteenth. This past week, Summer Solstice occurred which is when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky, its furthest point from the equator, and is the day with the longest period of daylight. “Solstice” (Latin: “solstitium”) means sun-stopping. The point on the horizon where the sun appears to rise and set, stops and reverses direction after this day.
This ‘sun stopping’ is reminder that there are times when we pause, take a breath, perhaps adjust our course and continue with our journey. As the START network, we are working with systems in a similar place. We are supporting individuals and systems of support as communities move back toward pre-pandemic activities. Our START teams are re-engaging and able to resume face-to-face interactions. We may experience and observe some anxiety or initial hesitation with this transition and it is important to acknowledge this ‘solstice/sun-stopping’, be mindful, take a breath, focus on our mission and continue on our journey. Remember that being present is the most effective part of our work.
