ON OUR MINDS

Great Scott!
Women give differently, according to research from our client, the Women’s Philanthropy Institute. Exhibit A? MacKenzie Scott. Scott continues to upend philanthropic norms, most recently with her June 15 post announcing $2.6 billion for 286 high-impact organizations, including venture philanthropy firm New Profit, a McP client (#ProudAgency). There is a lot to love about Scott’s approach, from unrestricted grants that place trust in local community leaders to the focus on social sector infrastructure to the acknowledgement that nonprofit staff are overworked and deserve better. We hope others in philanthropy will follow in Scott’s footsteps — shifting and yielding power to those on the front lines making change.
It’s About Prime
In not-quite-but-sorta related news, the world celebrated Amazon Prime Day on June 21, scoring deals on everything from Rumbas to Squatty Potties. The “holiday” exposes some hard truths about our behavior as consumers and what we’re willing to excuse or overlook in the name of a good, fast deal. But let’s avoid placing the blame on consumers, especially those who work long hours, have kids at home, and can’t easily access stores. This article from The Atlantic does an excellent job of capturing the layers of Amazon’s ubiquitous influence, likening Prime to climate change (it works), and highlighting the problematic consequences on our communities, local economies, environment, and even our happiness.
It’s (Not Just) Britney, B****
Our hearts collectively broke as Britney Spears gave her testimony in court this week, detailing the horrors she’s experienced during her conservatorship — including a forced IUD. The testimony shed light on a racist and misogynistic history of legislating sterilization, and called attention to how this practice persists today, particularly for people with disabilities who face additional challenges and stigma in representing themselves. The events sparked a number of important thought pieces, including this one on the “bubblegum misogyny of 2000s pop culture.” Britney’s testimony is a reminder that our legal systems can and must be challenged and reformed. On a personal note, I still remember the moves to my self-choreographed version of Lucky from my Bat Mitzvah; I’m pulling for you, Brit.
