Season 2 Review

June was a busy month for us as we wrapped up our Eat, Play, Love summer series.

First, we learned about the patient’s journey through the hurdles of the health care system with Dr. Sean Wharton. The audience appreciated his empathetic approach to defining obesity as a chronic disease.

I enjoyed Dr. Wharton’s presentation so much because he defined obesity in a way that made sense regarding medical issues, not BMI. I like how he described that the journey is about the patient and how advocating for the patient is most important. Most importantly, what made me feel good was when he talked about love, connection validation and acceptance being at the forefront and that it’s not just about weight loss. My aha moment was when he said, “things are better right now” and to take care of your own health.
Dr. Sandy Van then showed us how to tackle our eating behaviours and apply them to our everyday lives – she also gave us a delicious, nutritious cooking demonstration of a new recipe to try!

Next, Dr. Jeff Alfonsi joined us for a chat about measuring our nutrition. He covered what we should and should not be measuring when it comes to our diet and explained how using that data, as well as some new technologies, can help us in our decision on what and how to eat.

Lastly, Dr. Ravi Komatireddy and Sameer Peesapati talked about trying to prevent health problems before they pop up, and also about setting up an architecture environment where you set yourself up for success.

We hope you enjoyed the events as much as we did. Stay tuned for more news on events coming soon!

Adrianna's Summer Fashion Tips

This month we are featuring Obesity Matters' member Adrianna McDonald modelling Torrid's summer collection. Below are her tips n' tricks to make the most of her wardrobe.

"My go-to fashion items in the summer are:

Dresses - Light and airy and if you find the shape for you - absolutely flattering. I am a shorty so I tend to go with shorter Torrid dresses or their midi style.  Pockets are a must!

Bike shorts - Perfect for everything summer!  Wear a pair under dresses or skirts and no chafing. I own about four pairs of Torrid bike shorts as they are my second go-to!

Skirts - Paired well with a t-shirt or tank top.  I'm still wearing bike shorts under and you can't tell at all!"

Do you have any tips or stories to share?

Introducing Rachel's Corner

Welcome to Rachel’s Corner! Each month, I will share some of the things that inspire me to aim for living my best life. A few years ago, my life was crashing in nearly every way – at least that’s how I felt. With some introspection, support and a dose of curiosity, I recognized it wasn’t my weight that was out of control, it was my thoughts, my mindset and my ways of being. Today, I choose to surround myself with love and acceptance, immerse myself in meaningful activities and nurture healthy relationships. The choices we make each day set our strategy for how we live our lives. What choices are you making?
