The Letter From The Consulate

No. 163.
Gentofte/Copenhagen, Friday 25. June 2021
Dear reader,

With the best wisches for a nice weekend please find the latest news about Albania.

The EU Council 22.06.2021 meeting in Luxembourg was another disappointment. 26 countries were not able to convince No. 27 - Bulgaria - that they should not veto the setting of the promised date for the first Intergovernmental Conference - the IGC - between the EU and  Albania and North Macedonia.

Confused ? Then please read about the heated dispute about language and ethnicity between the two NATO and Council of Europe member states North Macedonia and Bulgaria.

From the EU Commission Website:

The German Minister for Europe, Michael Roth, said that the meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs today - 22.06.2021 - in Luxembourg is a good opportunity to address the issues face to face, after numerous virtual meetings at ministerial level. He says that the necessary decisions, such as setting the date for the First Intergovernmental Conference for Albania and Northern Macedonia, are overshadowed by bilateral conflicts.
The only obstacle to holding the first Intergovernmental Conference is the position of Bulgaria. Due to the clashes with Northern Macedonia, the Bulgarian government automatically blocks Albania, as the date will be set for both countries at the same time.

A  symbol  under transformation (see top photo) ........
Crashing and banging, workmen are crawling over the top of Tirana’s most famous, and most eccentric, building. After years of dilapidation Tirana’s pyramid is being restored and given a new purpose.
Enver Hoxha, Albania’s Stalinist dictator, died three years before the Piramida was completed in 1988. But the symbolism was clear: Hoxha was the Albanian pharaoh and the pyramid—co-designed by his daughter and son-in-law—would stand as a monument to his works. But after the collapse of communism in 1991 his memorial center was closed.
The pyramid has since had many lives, serving as home to trade fairs, a disco called “The Mummy” and, in 1999, a NATO base during the Kosovo war. Now, Erion Veliaj, Tirana’s mayor, argues that while history needs remembering, the building needs a new purpose and meaning. When it reopens, it will have entered the digital age, housing an organization that teaches young Albanians how to code.
