Events next week - hope you can participate!

Junior Regatta
June 29 & 30

The smooth operation of this regatta for young sailors depends on volunteers. From packing lunches, helping with registration, running the boat lift, to being on a committee or mark boat most of the day, there is definitely a job for you. Please email contact@cryc.org if you can help any amount of time from an hour to one or both days.

Summer has arrived and Ship Point is brimming with activity. Our partnership with the YMCA to hold sailing class is off to a successful start with a full class of junior sailors out on the Corsica. I’ve seen members out kayaking, sailing, and enjoying the sunset from the beach. Many thanks to whomever provided the picnic table and umbrella at the beach.

The CRYC sailing season got off to a good start with Comets racing in the Spring series. Our Junior Regatta will be held Tuesday and Wednesday – June 29 and 30. Come out to watch and support our junior sailors. The Log Canoes arrive the weekend of July 9 and 10 – come out to watch the racing on the Chester River. The Annual Regatta will be held July 24 and 25 with a full fleet of classic and modern boats participating.

This fall, CRYC will host two major regattas – the Comet Internationals and Penguin Internationals. Let’s dust off our Comets and Penguins and get ready for some fun racing. More details on these and other races in the fleet section of this newsletter.

I look forward to seeing everyone at Ship Point soon!

Please RSVP to contact@CRYC.org by Wed July 1st. Let us know if you are bringing a boat and are willing to have club members join you onboard.

>CRYC Teams with Shore Rivers for Water Quality Testing

Several CRYC members, along with members of the Corsica River Conservancy, are cooperating with Shore Rivers to collect water samples in and around the Corsica. The samples are collected on Thursday mornings and the results are usually posted by Friday afternoon.

You can see the results at theswimguide.org or by downloading the Swim Guide app to your device. Just open the map, find the Chesapeake, and zoom in on the Chester River.

>Boat Storage at Ship Point

Our goal for the year is to gain accountability for the club’s assets and ensure that they are maintained. Additionally, we will attempt to get a handle on member assets that are stored on club grounds. It appears that many of the boats and trailers are either abandoned or neglected. This has become a safety issue for the grass cutting crew who must move boats to cut the grass and a health issue for the members writ- large as many of these unattended boats have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

If your boat or trailer is not in good working condition it needs to be attended to.

>Junior Sailing

The Corsica River Yacht Club is excited to partner with the YMCA of the Chesapeake to deliver Sailing and Bay Studies Camps. These camps are offered to ages 5-12 years for Pee-Wee Sailing, Beginner Sailing and Advanced Sailing! Campers are transported by boat from the Gunston School to the Corsica River Sailing Center at Ship Point, about a 5-minute boat ride. Pickup and drop off is at the Gunston School. Campers need to bring a bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, lunch, snacks, and a refillable water bottle. Does your camper love the water?

The CRYC Junior Regatta is scheduled for June 29 and 30, 2021.  We will need all hands on deck.

>Fleet News

We encourage all sailors to join CBYRA. CRYC can receive funds from CBYRA to support our efforts in hosting regattas and for fleet support. Members choosing the Comet as their fleet will help CRYC receive fleet development funds.

Annual Regatta - July 24 and 25

Penguin Internationals - September 18 and 19, 2021

The Penguin is an 11-foot cat-rigged sailing dinghy designed in 1938 by Philip Rhodes. The design experienced a surge in popularity after an article with construction plans was published in Yachting Magazine in 1940. The boat was originally designed to be easily built by an amateur at home out of plywood. Penguins are available in wood and fiberglass today.

Comet North Americans - October 9 and 10, 2021

The Comet was designed by C. Lowndes Johnson as a trailerable version of the Star. The design combines a 16 foot hard chine planing hull with a classic sloop rig with a distinctively large mainsail. The result is a boat that can plane downwind and on a reach in just 10 to 12 knots of wind, yet remain stable upwind.

Her light weight (260-295 lbs.), generous sail area (140 sq. ft.) and semi-flat bottom, make her easily driven to weather and can be planned off the wind in breezes of only 10 to 12 knots. The boat carries a crew of two for racing, making it ideal for husband and wife or parent and child teams, The boat is easily trailered, rigged and launched. Even more importantly, the Comet is one of the most affordable one-designs in its class.
