CHUMASH

Parshas Pinchas - Rishon with Rashi

Hashem shows the Yidden that Pinchas did the right thing, and makes him a kohen! He tells Moshe that they will have to attack Midyan. He also tells Moshe to count the Yidden and that soon they will go into Eretz Yisroel!

Some of the Yidden were upset that Pinchas killed Zimri. They made fun of him and said he was like his grandfather, Yisro, who used to be mean to the animals he shechted for Avodah Zarah. They said that he wasn’t trying to do the right thing, he was just being mean like his grandfather. They said that Zimri was trying to do the right thing by marrying Kozbi, so that Moshe wouldn’t be upset at the whole shevet Shimon for doing an aveira by marrying the daughters of Moav.

To show that this is not true, this parsha starts by saying “Pinchas ben Elazar ben Aharon Hakohen” — saying that Pinchas comes from Aharon. That is who Pinchas was acting like! Aharon always tried to make peace between people, and Pinchas killed Zimri to bring peace between the Yidden and Hashem!

Hashem also made Pinchas a kohen, to show how happy He is with him! (Even though Pinchas came from the family of Aharon, he wasn’t a kohen before. He was born BEFORE Hashem said that Aharon and his sons will be kohanim, and a baby only becomes a kohen if his father is a kohen when he is born.)

But Zimri WASN’T trying to bring peace! Zimri’s name is “Zimri ben Salu Nesi Veis Av L’Shimoni.” The Torah tells us that his shevet is from Shimon, who killed the people of Shechem without rachmanus. The Torah is showing us that Zimri was NOT doing what he did to bring peace.

Hashem told Moshe that soon he will have to attack Midyan for what they did. Many of the girls who made the Yidden do aveiros were from Midyan, including Kozbi who was the daughter of one of the kings of Midyan.

It wasn’t time yet to attack Moav, though, even though most of the girls were from Moav, because Moav made trouble because they were scared of the Yidden. (Midyan didn’t have any reason to make trouble — they just did it because hated the Yidden.) Another reason not to attack Moav now was because Rus would later come from Moav.

Now Hashem told Moshe to count the Yidden again, to show how He loved them and took care of them the whole time in the Midbar. Soon they will be going into Eretz Yisroel, and we will see how many Yidden will be going into Eretz Yisroel.

TEHILLIM

83 - 87

In Kapitel Pey-Daled, there is a posuk (and a niggun) with the words “Yeilchu Mechayil El Choyil, Yeiro’eh El Elokim Betzion.” This means that people who trust in Hashem go from strength to strength, and they will see Hashem in Yerushalayim.

The Rebbe explains the connection — that “Yeilchu Meichayil El Choyil,” when we are always doing better than before, is what brings “Yeiro’eh El Elokim Betzion,” that we will be able to go to the Beis Hamikdosh! Every single hour, there is a new chayus from Hashem in the world, that gives us new chances and new kochos to be able to do even more than before. We need to take every new opportunity that Hashem gives us and make it into a mitzvah!

TANYA

Igeres Hateshuvah Perek Hey

We are learning what is special about a Yiddishe Neshama. This way we can understand what happens to it when someone does an aveira, and how a person can do Teshuvah.

We said that every Yid has the name of Hashem (Havaya) in his neshama. When we serve Hashem in a HIDDEN way (with our minds and hearts), we get chayus from the first half of Hashem’s name. When we ACT the way a Yid should, we get chayus from the last letters of Hashem’s name.

The chayus of Hashem which is in our neshama also gives chayus to the Guf (body). The chayus that connects us to Hashem is like a rope that ties two things together — it connects the Yid to Hashem, and Hashem’s chayus to the Yid.

When a Yid does an aveira that deserves the punishment of Kareis, it cuts off the chayus from Hashem to the guf.

The chayus that comes to a Yid is a very strong chayus from Hashem. It is compared to blowing, which takes much more energy than speaking!

When a Yid does a Kareis aveira, it’s like he is putting up a wall to block that powerful koach of Hashem.

That’s why in the times of the Beis Hamikdash, a person who did an aveira that deserves kareis passed away before he got old, because he couldn’t live without the chayus of his neshama. (Later this changed, and we will IY”H see why later.) He still had some chayus left from before he did the aveira so he is still able to live for some time (and has a chance to do teshuvah), but then the chayus runs out.

So what happens with other aveiros? It also weakens the Yid’s connection with Hashem, but it is a little different. Our connection to Hashem is like a big “rope” made of 613 strings, one for each mitzvah. If someone does an aveira, it’s like Chas Veshalom cutting ONE of these strings, which makes the entire rope of connection weaker.

We will learn later how to strengthen the connection again, through Teshuvah!

HAYOM YOM

Yud-Zayin Tammuz

Today is the fast of Shiva-Asar B’Tamuz. One thing that happened today is that this was the day when Moshe Rabbeinu broke the luchos after seeing the Yidden doing the aveira of the Cheit HaEgel. Because of this, Moshe Rabbeinu went back up onto Har Sinai and received a second set of luchos from Hashem. In today’s Hayom Yom, we will see that there is really something good and special that we got because we needed a second set of luchos!

There were four differences between the first and second Luchos:

1) The Luchos themselves: The first luchos were made by Hashem, but the second ones Hashem told Moshe Rabbeinu to make.

2) The writing of the luchos: The words of the Aseres Hadibros were not engraved in the second set of luchos the same way that they were in the first.

3) The Yidden: When the Yidden got the first luchos, they were like tzadikim (at Matan Torah). But when they got the second Luchos, they were like Baalei Teshuvah.

4) Moshe Rabbeinu: Moshe Rabbeinu got a special Ruchnius light as a present with the first luchos, but it was taken away by Cheit Ha’egel and with the second Luchos, he only got it back on Shabbos.

It looks like the first Luchos were much better!

But there was something very special about the second Luchos: They were given along with Halacha, Midrash, and Aggadah — we got much more Torah! And also, Moshe’s face was shining with the second Luchos.

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #14 - Mitzvas Lo Saasei #16, #17, #18, #19, #20, #21, #26, #28, #27, #29, #14, #8, #9, #7

Today we learn many more mitzvos about staying away from Avodah Zarah, and only serving Hashem!

In Rambam, we are now learning Hilchos Avodah Zarah. This set of halachos has 12 perakim and 51 mitzvos! It takes four days to learn the perakim (3 perakim each day), so we need to learn all of these 51 mitzvos in four days too! That is why we are learning so many mitzvos each day.

The first six mitzvos are about a Meisis:

1) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #16) No Yid is allowed to make someone else serve Avodah Zarah. He is called a meisis if he does, and the Beis Din punishes him with Sekilah. The one who he tried to convince to serve Avodah Zarah is the one the Torah says should carry out the punishment.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: וְלֹא יוֹסִפוּ לַעֲשׂוֹת כַּדָּבָר הָרָע הַזֶּה בְּקִרְבֶּךָ

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Zayin.

2) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #17) The person who the meisis tried to convince to serve Avodah Zarah can’t feel bad for the meisis. Even though there is a mitzvah of Ve’ahavta Leraeiacha Kamocha, it does not include this person.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: לֹא תֹאבֶה לוֹ

3) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #18) The person who the meisis tried to convince to serve Avodah Zarah can’t stop being angry at the meisis. Even though there is a mitzvah of Azov Taazov, to help another Yid, the Torah says that it doesn’t apply to a meisis.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: וְלֹא תִשְׁמַע אֵלָיו

4) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #19) Even though it is a mitzvah to save someone’s life (Lo Saamod Al Dam Reiacha), it doesn’t apply to a meisis. The person who the meisis tried to get to serve Avodah Zarah should not try to save the life of the meisis, even if he can.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: וְלֹא תָחוֹס עֵינְךָ עָלָיו

5) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #20) The person who the meisis tried to get to serve Avodah Zarah should not look for excuses in Beis Din so the meisis won’t get punished.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: וְלֹא תַחְמֹל

6) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #21) The person who the meisis tried to get to serve Avodah Zarah is not allowed to keep anything not nice he did a secret in Beis Din.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: וְלֹא תְכַסֶּה עָלָיו

The next four mitzvos are about not-true Nevuah:

7) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #26) A person is not allowed to say that he has a nevuah to go do Avodah Zarah. He can’t say that Hashem says to do Avodah Zarah, and he also can’t say that the Avodah Zarah said it will reward or punish people who serve it.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Shoftim: וַאֲשֶׁר יְדַבֵּר בְּשֵׁם אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים וּמֵת הַנָּבִיא הַהוּא

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Yud-Alef.

8) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #28) We can’t listen to someone who says he is a Navi for Avodah Zarah. For a true Navi, we test him to see if he knows the future. But for someone who says he is a Navi for Avodah Zarah, we don’t even give him a chance!

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Re’eh: לֹא תִשְׁמַע אֶל דִּבְרֵי הַנָּבִיא הַהוּא

9) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #27) It is asur to say ANY nevuah that didn’t really happen. This means that it is asur to say that Hashem said something that He really didn’t say, or to say that he got a nevuah that Hashem really says to a different Navi.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Shoftim: אַךְ הַנָּבִיא אֲשֶׁר יָזִיד לְדַבֵּר דָּבָר בִּשְׁמִי אֵת אֲשֶׁר לֹא צִוִּיתִיו לְדַבֵּר

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Yud-Alef.

10) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #29) We shouldn’t be afraid of a not-real Navi. We shouldn’t be afraid to punish him, even if he is saying Nevuos in the name of Hashem.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Shoftim: לֹא תָגוּר מִמֶּנּוּ

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Yud-Alef.

We learn one mitzvah about not promising in the name of an Avodah Zarah:

11) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #14) We can’t make a shevuah in the name of an Avodah Zarah, or even cause a goy to promise in the name of an Avodah Zarah.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Mishpatim: וְשֵׁם אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים לֹא תַזְכִּירוּ

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Zayin.

The last three mitzvos for today are about not serving different types of Avodah Zarah:

12) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #8) We are not allowed to serve the Avodah Zarah called Ov.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Kedoshim: אַל תִּפְנוּ אֶל הָאֹבֹת

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Zayin.

13) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #9) We are not allowed to serve the Avodah Zarah called Yidoni.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Kedoshim: אַל תִּפְנוּ אֶל הָאֹבֹת וְאֶל הַיִּדְּעֹנִים

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Zayin.

14) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #7) We are not allowed to serve the Avodah Zarah called Molech.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Acharei: וּמִזַּרְעֲךָ לֹא תִתֵּן לְהַעֲבִיר לַמֹּלֶךְ

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Zayin.

RAMBAM

Hilchos Avodas Kochavim

Perek Daled: We learn about an Ir Hanidachas, a city where a lot of people started serving Avodah Zarah. The whole city has to be destroyed!

In Perek Hey, we learn about a person who tries to get other people to serve Avodah Zarah (a meisis), and the punishment he gets.

Perek Vov: In this perek, we learn about different types of Avodah Zarah. In the beginning of the perek we learn the details of today’s mitzvos, about the Avodah Zarah of Ov, Yidoni, and Molech.

RAMBAM PEREK ECHOD

Hilchos Erchin V'Charamin - Perek Vov

Now we start learning the halachos of Charomim (things that are cherem). We learn who gets the cherem (the kohanim or the Beis Hamikdash, depending on what we said), and that we have to give the thing itself, not its value. We also learn what happens if someone gives something that wasn’t his, or promises to give something that isn’t there yet (like a fruit that didn’t grow yet), or if someone gives by mistake.

INYANA D'YOMA

The Three Weeks

Nowadays, the avodah of the Three Weeks is a bit different than it used to be!

In Tof-Shin-Nun-Alef, there were very big nisim that happened in the world, like the Gulf War, where the Yidden in Eretz Yisroel were saved from a big rasha named Saddam who wanted to hurt us; and that Yidden were able to leave Russia, where they had been stuck for so long!

The Rebbe told us that this is a sign that we’re going into the times of Moshiach!

The Rebbe said then that now we need to look differently at these three weeks. Because we are so close to the Geulah, we should think less about how sad the Churban is, and think more about making ourselves excited about the fact that we will see the Beis Hamikdash soon!

By adding in Torah and mitzvos in general, especially in the mitzvah of Ahavas Yisroel, and by learning the halachos of the Beis Hamikdash and how it looks, we will soon see the Beis Hamikdash rebuilt again!

TEFILLAH

Asking for Moshiach on a Fast Day

We add extra parts to davening on a fast day, like Selichos and Avinu Malkeinu.

We also have Kriyas HaTorah on a fast day. During the Kriyas HaTorah of Mincha, we leinVayechal,” about the teshuvah for the Cheit Ha’eigel and the second Luchos. We lein a haftorah from Yeshaya, who was the Navi that spoke the most about the Geulah.

In Shemoneh Esrei of Shacharis, the chazan says the paragraph of Aneinu, and in Shemoneh Esrei of Mincha, EVERYONE says Aneinu. We ask Hashem that on this special day of the taanis, Hashem should answer us (“Aneinu”) and fulfill our requests — especially to bring the Geulah!

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

The Three Weeks

Today is Shiva Asar B’Tammuz.

Shiva Asar B’Tammuz is one of the four fasts we have during the year to remember the Beis Hamikdash. This is the day that the walls of Yerushalayim were broken, later leading to what happened on Tisha B’av.

(Many other sad things happened on Shiva Asar B’Tamuz too: Moshe Rabbeinu broke the luchos, the Yidden didn’t have any more sheep on this day to bring the Korban Tomid, the big rasha Apostomos burned a Sefer Torah, and resha’im put an idol in the Beis Hamikdash.)

Here are the halachos of the Three Weeks, which start today:

- We don’t make chasunas
- We don’t listen to music
- We don’t do things that need a bracha Shehecheyanu (like buying new clothes)
- The Rebbe tells us to learn the halachos about the Beis Hamikdash.

For a detailed review of the halachos of the Three Weeks, see this review made for Melbourne: click here

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

Shiva-Asar B'Tammuz When Moshiach Comes

In many places in Navi, we see the sad details of the story of the Churban, and the things that happened before it. We learn about the siege around Yerushalayim, the breaking into the city, and finally the destruction of both the first and second Beis Hamikdash on Tisha B’Av.

In one of the nevuos that Hashem said through the Navi Zechariah, we see what all these sad things are supposed to turn into. The Navi tells us that the fast days where we are sad about the Churban will change into Yomim Tovim!

Ko Amar Hashem Tzevakos — This is what Hashem says:

Tzom Harevii — the fast of the fourth month (Shiva-Asar B’Tammuz — the months are counted from Nisan)

Vetzom Hachamishi — and the fast of the fifth month (Tisha B’Av)

Vetzom Hashvi’i — and the fast of the seventh month (Tzom Gedaliah)

Vetzom Ha’asiri — and the fast of the tenth month (Asara B’Teves)

Yihiyeh Leveis Yehudah — will become for the Yidden

Lesason Ulesimcha U’lemoadim Tovim — days of joy and happiness, and Yomim Tovim!

Veha’emes VehaShalom Ehavu — As long as you love Emes and Shalom (meaning that this will happen in the zechus of your love for Emes and Shalom).

We hope will be zoche to see this nevuah come true very soon, and the fast of Shiva-Asar B’Tammuz will be celebrated instead as a great Yom Tov!
