ISSUE NO. 11  June 27, 2021
Hi friends,

Most people only start fresh once a year, when the clock strikes midnight on January 1. It is the most opportune time to do so. It’s a whole new year, a brand-new month. If you’re a student, you may get another fresh start in August or September. To me, the new school year always felt more like a fresh start than January did, not only because of new teachers and classmates but also because of crisp, new notebooks.

No longer a student, I’ve had to recreate this mid-year fresh start in another way: with my bullet journal. It usually takes me six months to fill a notebook, so I’ve had one notebook for January-June for the past few years, and another for July-December. It wasn’t until I starting setting up my new notebook this week that I realized how quickly this year has gone by, especially in contrast to the last.

While looking back on my last bullet journal, I realized a lot has changed since January, including myself. There were so many changes, in fact, that it feels like January was so long ago. On a small scale, I’ve reevaluated my bullet journal method to better suit my current lifestyle, which now involves heading back to my New York office twice a week. On a larger scale, I’ve experimented with several different things that have helped me better understand and appreciate my most authentic self. More on both of these topics soon.

Mostly, I’m just really looking forward to turning a corner this July and riding out the second half of this year with all the knowledge I’ve accumulated over the past six months—with a new journal to my stack to show for it.

Are you giving yourself a fresh start in July, either with a new notebook or another way? Hit reply and tell me the details—I’d really love to know!

Here’s to a clean slate and a blank sheet.

this week I loved...

1. The beta for Pokémon Unite. I’ve been itching to play a new Pokémon game (especially with my brother) and this one is looking so promising!

2. This essay Jake Pitts wrote about me and my last newsletter, Megan Portorreal Stays Ready. I’m glad it made such a connection with him!

3. This Ask Polly column, titled Am I Abusive? As always, Heather Havrilesky nails this. Even if it was a bit triggering to read, it was so good.

4. The season finales for The Handmaid’s Tale and Cruel Summer. It’s just been a really good time for TV lately.
