Kia ora whānau,

Stop the press ... exciting news!!!!   New addition to the playground coming soon!!
Last year when our tamariki designed possible ideas for their playground, the bike & scooter  track and a swing set was the victorious final vote from many wonderful ideas that were shared.  The bike and scooter track was first on the list and was completed in March, with the children and community enjoying this regularly.

With a generous $4000 donation from our wonderful PTA, and a further $4000 donation from the Lion Foundation we are now able to install the set of swings!   The children are super excited to see their ideas in the playground .  The swings are set to be installed over this coming term break;  ready to use at the start of Term 3.  A huge and heart-felt Bradford thank you to our PTA and to the Lion Foundation for their generous donation to turn our children's ideas into reality!

Stop the press! .... more exciting news!!!
Last term we had a trial 'Loose Parts' lunch time play where Sport Otago brought in lots of open ended play equipment for children to explore and use their imagination to construct and create with.  It was a real hit!  Research around providing Loose Parts Play shows that this type of play enhances engagement at school, social relationships, healthy risk-taking, imagination and creativity.  After our trial session we gained feedback from the children and applied to the  Sport Otago Tu Manawa fund to purchase our own Loose Parts equipment, storage and facilitation.  We are excited to share we have been successful!  THANK YOU Sport Otago Tu Manawa!   This will be another awesome addition to our playground for our children to explore and develop.   You can read more about Loose Parts Play at the Sport NZ site:

... yet more exciting developments to share ...
The Ministry of Education has approved a property modification project we have been awaiting, which will see the Room 6 journal room upgraded and turned into a quiet break out or low sensory space; the igloo off Room 5 will be improved and our storage areas in the resource room,  break out spaces and classrooms will also be upgraded.  Included in this project is a complete fire system upgrade as well!  Below are some of the initial images of designs for this project.

Matariki is celebrated over New Zealand from June 19th to July 11th.  Matariki marks the start of the Māori New Year and is a time for whānau and whole communities to  reflect on the year that has been and look forward to the year ahead.  There are many events on in our local community to enjoy, some of which are highlighted in our newsletter this week.
The Te Papa website also has some awesome information and activities to explore to find out more about Matariki.

Online Safety Evening Information
Thank you to those who were able to make it along to the 'Our Kids Online' Cybersafety parent evening last Thursday night.  We thank Otago Community Trust for sponsoring this event through the Ngā Tapa Whā initiative Bradford, Mornington and Ōpoho Schools are involved in.

Presenters Rob and Zareen are highly sought after speakers with a key message all parents should hear.  They have been researching  trends in what children are exposed to and are navigating online for the past 2 and a half years; working with experts from around the globe and here in NZ.   Rob and Zareen also shared the emotional, physical and mental impact that this has on our children and society as a whole.    What they shared was eye opening, a bit scary, and at times mind blowing.  If you were unable to make it along; we encourage you to go to their site
https://www.ourkidsonline.info/   Rob and Zareen shared some really important messages, as well as practical strategies.
The examples and statistics that were shared were very confronting, however even more concerning is they are totally in line with what police in Dunedin are also sharing with us.

Rob and Zareen are very passionate about sharing what they know to help keep children safer in the online environment and have created a documentary which we are able to screen here at school.  Their documentary is also available for viewing on their website for a small cost for those who prefer to stream at home and watch at your leisure.

The lost property is growing... and growing!
We think perhaps there are lots of missing items from some of our children's drawers at home.
Lost property has been out in the foyer over the past week for children to look through, however there is still a massive pile.
Please come in over the next week or two to check and see if any of the items belong to your family.

CHAT  BUS
Chat bus is at school Monday, Tuesday and Friday if you would like your child to attend.   Sue Evans,  continues as our Chatbus Registered Counsellor for 2021.
