South Waikato - Whakatane - Opotiki - Tarawera Career Expos May & June

Dear FICA Members, Sponsors & Industry

Kia ora tatou
We have now successfully completed another four Forestry Careers Days with the EXPO at SOUTH WAIKATO – TOKOROA SPORTS AND EVENTS CENTRE, WHAKATANE HIGH SCHOOL (Trident High School visiting), OPOTIKI COLLEGE and TARAWERA HIGH SCHOOL (Edgecumbe College visiting)

For the Career Expo in Tokoroa it was held at the Centre and forestry had an ideal location right at the start of the journey through for students. The stats proved very successful with nearly 1600 students from 18 schools through that day and plenty of entries into the truck competition again for us with winner going into a lucky prize draw - spending th eday being a Truckie!

The next three Career Expos have been directly engaged with the students at the High Schools and these have been extremely successful. The format of the 90min sessions with work stations for the students to interact with the industry participants and to get their engagement through a quiz that we have them complete. The answers are all within the displays and we encourage them to connect with the industry reps. The students have been more involved and engaged than those attending the "all of industry" Career Expo.

For those students not really intersted in the Expo we have at least made their time at the venue fun with games of Giant Jenga and Corn Hole that are creating a great atmosphere and they will remember that at least it was not a "typical ho hum career workshop" they attended.

The strength of the Expos has been in the industry partners that have attended collectively with FICA and we wish to do a big shout out to:

Te Uru Rakau - Forest Service
   Competenz
   Toi Ohoimai and the simulator
   Future Foresters
   LTSC - Log Truck Companies
   Generation Programme
   Central North Island Wood Council

Thanks to Glen Mackie at NZFOA for getting us all the career folders together for us. Really appreciate this support.

We have our final Career Expo in Taupo on the 26 August but meantime the newsletter is really a compilation of images as they say a 1000 words anyway!

Through the support of funding by Ministry of Education and events that connect schools, communities, and employers, FICA were successful in getting six locations across the South Waikato to manage forestry specific career expos. We are on a journey and so far so good.

WHAKATANE HIGH SCHOOL & TRIDENT HIGH
Another day of several year 10 and 12 students coming through the expo and getting to discuss one on one the opportunities with forestry. Congratulations Sadie & Luke for winning the competitons that day!
OPOTIKI HIGH SCHOOL
You rock, we felt very well received at the school with very attentive students, keen to get involved with the quiz, with the industry and with Guess the Weight of the Truck - thanks to STS for your support (Janie and Scooter)
Great note of thanks from Alison Waller, Subject Adviser for Science - Learning Connections Kaiārahi, Ōpōtiki College
I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you and whole team that came to visit yesterday. It was so lovely to see our students so engaged. It was also great that you came to us and we did not have to venture out and waste valable learning time travelling. We would definitely love to host again next year. Please keep in touch. Many thanks Alison
TARAWERA HIGH SCHOOL (KAWERAU) AND EDGECUMBE HIGH
What a great school, thanks to Maxine and the team of teachers there. Year 9 - 10 - 11 and 12 students attended with much interest. We all had a few laughs with these students. Broke the Expo GIANT JENGA record of 37 stories!! Even Jordon from Williams & Wilshier was a hit with his cab visits - plenty of truck drivers might come from this career day!
FICA are moving into a second year of a National Recruitment Campaign with NZME as partners. Covering all the industry sectors, we will through 12 months with new and stimulating artwork and information to support a career in FORESTRY! Check out the national careers site forestrycareers.nz
