Message From The Chair
Bike Friendly City: Lodi

Bike Lodi has been quite busy the last few months. We kicked off the first phase of our “Bike Friendly City: Lodi” campaign on June 3 with the disbursement of yard signs, banners, 4' x 8' bus shelter signs and social media postings in English and Spanish. The campaign goals are to continue to educate and advocate for the safe use of bicycles as a viable and sustainable means of transportation and enjoyment. The initial feedback has been fantastic! We are excited about maximizing our efforts to add Lodi to the list of bike friendly cities.

Bike Lodi extends ineffable gratitude to first, Keith Colgan. Keith is the amazing photographer who donated his time and expertise at four different sessions to create images of Lodians on bikes. He captured all we hoped for and more!

Second, Michael Georguson, owner of Valley Outdoor Advertising was instrumental in our success. His valuable advice, insight, creations and donations to this project made all the difference.

Bike Lodi appreciates all the support from those who placed yard signs at their homes and spread them around town, businesses that displayed signs in their windows, and those who “liked” and shared social media posts. A campaign like this takes all of us!
Greenline Feasibility Study

The San Joaquin Council of Governments (SJCOG) currently is conducting a feasibility study of the unused Union Pacific spur line that runs through Lodi. This is required for the project, which hopes to convert the spur line into a valuable community rails-to-trails facility for cyclists and pedestrians, as well as new safe route to schools. The trail will take people through the heart of Lodi, connecting downtown with Lodi Lake and Woodbridge. Please keep your eyes open for the upcoming community meetings, survey and flyers as we pursue educating the community on the positive attributes of this project. If you’d like to volunteer and work on the outreach team, please send an e-mail to bikelodica@gmail.com. We’d love to have you join us!

The Great Central Valley Bicycle Route
by Jeff Pell

Planning a bicycle tour to ride the length of California’s Central Valley would seem a daunting challenge for any bicycle tourist. Currently, there is very little published information on the best route available or accommodations along the way.  Anyone wanting to ride the valley will need to figure out for themselves how to navigate the towns, cities, and agricultural areas they will encounter.

Thanks to a group of cyclists and community activists, this is about to change. Calling it The Great Central Valley Bicycle Route (GCVBR), this proposed bike route from Redding on the north to Bakersfield on the south will traverse 13 counties on its 700 mile course through the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys. A valley focused route, the GCVBR is designed for the bicycle tourist to travel on paved, lightly trafficked roads, through areas rich with historic, cultural and scenic variety. Support services such as hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, bicycle repair and general retail are key target points along the route.

Bike Lodi is one of several local groups from up and down the valley collaborating on this new route.  With input from Bike Lodi, The Great Central Valley Bicycle Route is mapped to run through San Joaquin County from Thornton on the north, through downtown Lodi, Linden and Escalon, entering Stanislaus County and Modesto to the south.

The GCVBR is a work in progress. The hope is that someday soon long distance touring bicyclists will have all the information they need to plan and comfortably navigate the heart of California, enjoying all it has to offer.

The Future of Transportation
The San Joaquin Council of Governments requests your participation in the Regional Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy (RTP/SCS) by simply completing a MetroQuest survey. The future of transportation depends on the residents of San Joaquin County! Just Do It!
Third Park-to-Park Ride
The Park-to-Park ride is back! Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 4, 2021, 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The event, a joint effort of Bike Lodi and the Lodi Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department, will start at Lodi Lake. Festivities will begin with the Lodi PD Partners offering FREE bike licenses from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. This is an excellent opportunity to get licenses for all the bikes in the family! All riders will hit the road at 9:00 a.m. There will be two routes again this year: a shorter five mile ride suitable for smaller children and longer 10 + mile course. Each route will visit different Lodi parks, utilizing bike lanes whenever possible. Riders will receive Park-to-Park Passports to track their tours. Everyone who shows a Passport will be entered into a raffle for prizes donated by local businesses. Children must wear helmets! And, please bring water.
