Don't forget to answer the question below.

What have you created WITH others?  It can be just you and another person, or a group of people, but it must be something you didn’t just create on your own – it needed others to make it happen or make it better.

Story of the Week:

Big Things Are Created When People Come Together

On Saturday, I attended Nashville’s Grand Tradition, the Iroquois Steeplechase.  It’s a horserace set against the beautiful backdrop of the sloping hills at Percy Warner Park.  This year marked the 80th race.  During the 8 decades of this event, there are only 2 years the race was cancelled – 1944 during WWII and last year, 2020 because of covid.  Originally, the steeplechase started in Ireland in the 18th century, as horses and riders raced from one town’s steeple to the next.  Church steeples were used for markers due to their visibility over long distances.  They raced over natural country, jumping over streams and low stone walls separating estates.  Nashville’s Iroquois Steeplechase is designed with obstacles to mimic the difficult nature and spirit of the race history.  The feature race was named after Iroquois, the 19th century American horse who won the 1881 Epson Derby in England.

The event itself was so much fun and amazing, but what I really love thinking about is what people can create when they come together with their generosity and great ideas.  The land was donated and named after the Warner Brothers, Percy and Edwin.  At the same time, prominent horsemen in Nashville were looking to build a course that could rival the best in England.  With money provided by FDR’s Works Progress Administration in the early 40’s, the first steeplechase in Nashville began in 1941.  Now, because of their generosity and creativity, jockeys, trainers, owners, horses, and spectators come together every year to celebrate this annual tradition.  I can easily relate this into my world of music; where writers, musicians, vocalists, mixers, and producers all come together to create a song, giving people enjoyment, lasting for generations.  Most big and lasting things aren’t done alone!  We need each other to create.

It was fun to be a part of this creative and collaborative Nashville tradition.

Question of the Week:
