SOCIAL JUSTICE

Interfaith Power & Light invites you to view the 30-minute film, “Other Side of the Hill.” It offers a hopeful inspiring look at local leaders on the ground in rural America who are leading climate action in their communities. But it is also about coming together, finding common ground and new climate frameworks, and shining a light on rural voices as we envision a path forward. The film will be available for free online viewing July 10 - 25. Registration opens July 1.

You can watch the trailer and sign up to get a registration reminder here.

In addition to the movie, members of our Social Justice Committee will hold an online discussion on how we can reach out and bridge the divide.

Composting 101

If you want to start composting, but aren't sure where to begin, Danielle Parks, Sustainability Coordinator at Sustaining Way, breaks down what you need to know in this helpful blog post.

Local Red Cross Board member (and longtime GUUF member) Jo Anne Hennigan reminds us that the Red Cross needs your help! Thankfully, we’ve been spared lately the hurricanes that usually bring the Red Cross to top of mind, but home fires (unfortunately) never take a break. Did you know that after a home fire, 40 percent of the American public cannot cover an expense of $400 or more? The Red Cross spends an average of $1250 per family, helping home fire victims get on the road to recovery. Can you be a Hometown Hero and help? The Upstate Chapter of the American Red Cross has been offered a challenge match: your contribution will be matched until the total reaches $5000! Here’s the link to make your contribution count double: https://e.givesmart.com/events/lsk/c/:JOQZfJcnIJ_/

COMMUNITY CARING

We Celebrate With:
  • We celebrated Don Youngblood's 80th birthday this past weekend with our first get-away in months. - Lynda Molnar

  • Celebrating her victory in a landmark 5-4 decision this day 8 years ago, Edie Windsor was successful in striking down part of the Federal “Defense of Marriage Act” (DOMA) based on a violation of her 5th Amendment rights to “equal liberty as a lesbian woman who had been married to her wife, whom she had lived with for 40 years. Edie died on Sept. 12th, 2017, but her contribution to the LGBTQIA community lives on. -Candy Kern
