Hello, friends! Today is Independence Day in the United States. Indeed, I'm watching "Independence Day" as I type this. In the last few years, many of us have seen a change in our relationship with our country. The problems that many face on a daily basis can no longer be ignored.
This is a good thing. Being willing to face and discuss the country's problems is not unpatriotic. It's the most patriotic. To ignore issues of race and inequality—to forbid educators from even discussing them—does the country a disservice. America has always been aspirational. We have never held up to the lofty ideals that we claim for ourselves. Often we act in direct opposition.
Let's do better. Let's try to be the people we claim to be.
