Use these safety measures and have a Happy 4th!

"About 40% of boating fatalities include alcohol. Drinking while boating carries the same penalties as drinking while driving, so make sure you have a designated driver or leave alcohol on shore" (MN DNR).

Underage drinking and driving
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA) found that a person who begins drinking as a young teen is four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than someone who waits until adulthood to use alcohol. The brain develops and grows up until age 25 along with many new skills, such as driving. From 2015-2019, the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety found alcohol contributed to 15 fatalities and 92 serious injuries in crashes involving a teen driver. These are very preventable harms though, and parents and teens can talk about some basic boundaries.

The NIAA suggest the following guidelines or talking points:
• Kids will not drink until they are 21.
• Older siblings will not give younger members of the family alcohol or encourage them to drink.
• Kids will not stay at parties where alcohol is served.
• Kids will not be passengers in a car with a driver who has been drinking.

Anheuser-Busch plans biggest beer giveaway ever to encourage vaccination

"If the goal is met [70% vaccination], Anheuser-Busch will give every drinking-age American a beer if they upload a picture of themselves in their favorite drinking spot [...] The prize will come in the form of a $5 voucher for beer, seltzer, or non-alcoholic beverages. Meanwhile, skeptics argue that giveaways haven't been that effective in driving vaccine-reluctant Americans to get the shot. Lotteries, say economists, are much more tempting. The idea of a chance at $1 million, no matter how unlikely, is more motivating than a $5 gift card for beer, said Richard Thaler, a Nobel Prize winning economist at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business" (Fortune.com).
