New paper shows more girls than ever are completing school around the world

A new paper launched today jointly with UNESCO and timed with the Generation Equality Forum being held in Paris shows that girls' primary completion rates have increased by almost 20 percentage points over the past 25 years to reach 87%. This in addition to the finding from our 2020 Gender Report that 180 million more girls have enrolled in primary and secondary education since 1995 means there is a lot to celebrate - and a lot to look forward to for the next generation of girls.

Read the paper to see which countries are leading the way.

Join our cartoon competition on non-state actors in education

We have launched our first ever cartoon competition in partnership with the Cartoon Movement, a global platform for editorial cartoons and comics journalism with a community of over 500 cartoonists in more than 80 countries.

The competition is focused on the theme of the forthcoming 2021/2 GEM Report covering the role, influence, benefits and concerns about non-state actors in education.  The winner will provide the best cartoon depiction of the issues around school choice and the impact of non-state actors in access, equity and quality in education and will receive $500. Multiple new language versions of our Eurasia report on inclusion

The GEM regional report produced with the European Agency for Special Needs and Inclusive Education and the Network of Education Policy Centers on Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia is now available in Russian. An executive summary version is available in 28 languages: shqip / հայերեն / azərbaycan / беларуская / bosanski / български / hrvatski / čeština / eesti / ქართული / magyar / qazaqşa / Кыргызча / latviešu / lietuvių / македонски / монгол хэл / црногорски / polski / română / српски / slovenščina / slovenský / Тоҷикӣ / türk / Українська / O'zbek

A regional webinar and region-wide media release for the publications called on countries to shed one of the most poignant legacies of the second half of the 20th century: segregated education. An opinion piece by the Assistant-Director General for UNESCO focused on the persistence of this practice, while a commentary by the GEM Report director on EuroNews discussed the extreme exclusion still faced by Roma communities in Central and Eastern Europe.
