The June 2021 issue of Light Metal Age has been released to digital and print subscribers.
Highlights from this issue include the new casthouse started up at Western Extrusions and a focus on automotive manufacturing, with a particular emphasis on electric vehicles (EVs). Automotive centered articles include the development of a new research and development ecosystem, material selection for chassis components in EVs, the growth of the EV market, EV forging solutions, and the development of a new grain refiner to benefit automotive.
A number of articles address extrusion technologies, providing discussions on a new rotating extrusion method, how low porthole preheating temperatures affect mandrel integrity in extrusion dies, the importance of pretreatment in anodizing, and the winners of the International Aluminum Extrusion Design Competition. Additional articles include a look at the reduced carbon intensity of aluminum cans, new developments in aluminum-scandium alloys, and the need to strengthen fire response teams at aluminum operations.
The cover shows the casting of aluminum billet at Western Extrusions’ new casthouse in Carrollton, TX. The new automated casting line enables the extruder to control its own billet supply, increase its use of recycled scrap, achieve high sustainability, and ensure the safety of its personnel.
