Things are kicking off in July with NAIDOC Week!
Feast your eyes on a preview of our 2021 NAIDOC Exhibition, NAIDOC Markets,
and Birrunga's unique art show in Bathurst!

You've probably heard the news that Brisbane and Moreton regions have a 24hr extension to COVID lockdown, announced earlier this morning.
We were hoping to be able to squeak our opening event into being but we've been pipped at the post!
Our opening event will now be held at the same time the following Saturday evening, July 10.
This will be the final evening of NAIDOC 2021 so it will still be a special timing.
The works will now be up for the week preceding event, which will make for a retrospective opening! Only in COVID right?!?
To offer some compensation for the inconvenience to existing ticket holders and as an added bonus to those who pick up tickets in the interim, we are including a presentation by Birrunga which shows the process of an Archibald Prize entry from blank canvas to finished product.
The subject of the presentation is Uncle Archie Roach's portrait from 2014, Birunga's first ever Archibald entry.

Dreaming Chaos by Kane Brunjes
"Seen are fragments of dreams had while on Kabi Kabi Country.
Centre to the piece is the skeleton of a snake, highlighting the fabric between life and death, and our waking/sleep state.
In the dreaming, this snake had it’s life taken - although once awake, it’s essence still remained truly alive. Words are also present, speaking of good health and healing. This continues with a story seen to the left of the canvas.
Depicted are three trees that had been scarred positioned in the ashes of Country recently burned. I had been following my Aunty, walking through the bush until we stopped to look at these trees.
And soon, should we return, I’m sure we would see health in the land brought to life by the fire just moments passed by.
While the moon in the top left represents the time of the Pink moon."

"This painting is about a group of stingrays I saw while walking along the dock at Kings Beach.
The lines on the stingrays represent the way they undulate their bodies like a wave."

Bundyi Giiang (Shared Story) by Birrunga Wiradyuri
"All water in the Goori society is feminine, so it is referred to as “she”.
Different stretches of the river as given different names, but for the purposes of this painting, this stretch of the river flowing down from Ipswich towards the sea is called Mairwar.
She (Mairwar) has seen many changes and has been subject to many of those changes. She is scarred and not the same. Her healing is connected to the healing of our people.
When people look at her, they see the British names, but beneath this is her heart and the names her first born people have her.
Beneath the artwork are her names, are the memory of her beauty and what she provided to her first born children; the Goori.
This painting tells of her sadness and her history; it tells of our sadness and our history. Her story should be told and with her healing; is our healing."

__ Illumination Light Walk @ Bathurst
|
|
A large scale projection of Birrunga's artworks can be seen in Bathurst CBD as part of the Bathurst Winter Festival's Illumination Light Walk!
Entitled Ngurambang Ngayirr Wahluu, this work has been formed in consultation with Birrunga's Elders, to have a Bathurst Wiradyuri Centric, Cultural truth telling stories projected onto a building on ground zero.
Special thanks to Todd Brownlow of the Mitchell Conservatorium for creating the soundtrack, to Michael Killalea of ESM Projects for animation, editing and projection work, and to Bathurst Winter Festival for the opportunity.

__ CPD Event - Respecting Country through Design
|
|
Reconciliation between non-Indigenous and First Nations peoples of Australia is one of the most urgent challenges facing the architectural profession.
Architecture is fundamentally connected to Country, and architects require competency in navigating the relationship with Indigenous lands and peoples as part of everyday practice.
This CPD event hosts three speakers who offer extensive insight from the Indigenous perspective and provide guidance for practitioners on how to approach this competency in a culturally respectful way.
The overarching question posed is: how can architects honour Country through design, while bringing the client along for the reconciliation journey?

__ Brisbane Portrait Prize - Indigenous Finalists Showcase
|
|
Birrunga Gallery is proud to announce that the Brisbane Portrait Prize will be presenting the works of Indigenous artists who make the finals at our gallery space for the 2021 Brisbane Portrait Prize!
Hosted and curated by Birrunga Wiradyuri:
"We are heartened by the professionalism and community mindedness of the BPP Board in making this opportunity available for Blak artists in the prize to be exhibited in a Blak space. We hope this will inspire artists to enter works who otherwise might not give it a go. We're excited to see the results."
