Working & Caring
June 2021

Welcome to the June edition of Working & Caring!

This month we marked Carers Week with a number of activities at Signpost, including an online session for carers looking to get back into work or find a new job. You can read more about this event below and catch-up on the recording if you missed it. Carers Week also saw the release of some new research on carers' breaks, 'Breaks or breakdown'. Those of us at Signpost who speak to carers every day weren't surprised to hear that 72% of carers surveyed had not had any breaks during the pandemic (2,850 carers were surveyed). Working carers were similarly affected to those not working: the majority of working carers (55%) said they felt overwhelmed by their caring role, and three quarters (75%) said they felt exhausted as a result of their caring role. 25% of respondents to the survey also said they spent breaks during the pandemic to catch-up on sleep.

At Signpost we're in the process of developing a bookable space at the Heatons Centre for Stockport’s carers to come to, whether it be to relax and watch TV, catch-up on admin or sleep, apply for jobs, read a book or make personal calls. The room will be for carers to enjoy and use as their own. It could also be used in conjunction with our Take A Break service (paid for care provision) if this was preventing you from coming. In order to design the 'Room of Requirement' we've created a short survey here to find how you'd best use it and when you last had a break. You'll read more about the Room of Requirement in Signpost's upcoming Carelink magazine which is due out in the post (or by email) in the next couple of weeks. It also includes an interview with me (!) and an update on the Work With Us project so far.

This month's carers' story (below) comes from Morgan, who is one of over a thousand carers to have registered with us at Signpost this year. Morgan cares for his partner Emily and has written a beautiful piece about their relationship, their daily struggles and his hopes for a post-pandemic world. I'm sure many carers will identify with what he's written.

Best wishes,

Rebecca

Thank you to everyone that attended our Carers Week online session – Your World of Work: What you want and how to get it!

We were joined by careers coach Rebecca Amin who gave a 90 minute session covering everything from CVs, to LinkedIn profiles, to transferrable skills to helping you think about what sort of job you'd like to do next.

If you would like access to Rebecca's three part workbook to help you think about your next steps in work, please get in touch. You can also download Rebecca's 'Career Change Checklist’ by subscribing to her mailing list here.

You can watch a recording of the event below.

*New* Caring & Careers monthly meet-ups

During the Carers Week session, a discussion arose about creating a safe space for carers who are looking for work to be able to meet-up and chat about job searching, the interview process, endless application forms and anything in between!

As a result, we're now planning a monthly Zoom call on the last Thursday of every month from 11am -12pm. If this time/day doesn't work for you but you'd like to join, please let us know.

Meet-ups will be informal and you can drop in and out as you wish. Sometimes job hunting can feel like a lonely process and we want this to be a comfortable space where you feel supported and are free to chat about your own experiences and encourage others.

The first meet-up will be on Thursday 29th July, 11am -12pm via Zoom.

Even if you havn't started looking for work, but are thinking about it, feel free to come along for a chat! Carers and former carers are welcome.

Pride month

As Pride Month comes to a close, we wanted to highlight some support available to LGBT+ carers (as well as the cared for person) in Stockport.

LGBT Foundation have a telephone befriending programme, Rainbow Brew Buddies, that aims to reduce loneliness for LGBT people across Greater Manchester.

The programme aims to support people who may have reduced opportunities to make social connections due to the current government COVID-19 restrictions or other circumstances in their life, including caring responsibilities.
Forward aim to provide a visible and dedicated safe space for local LGBT+ people, family and friends, to meet, participate and share with the wider community.

During the lockdown, they have started virtual socials to bring people together. These include mindfulness, quizzes, speakers and general catching-up.
