Plus, zombies return to the Monroeville Mall.

By Francesca Dabecco

It’s Tuesday, Pittsburgh.

Is everyone staying cool out there? 😎 We’re riding a real weather rollercoaster this week, with temperatures in the 90s today and then cooling down tomorrow as the storms roll in. Hopefully we’ll have clear skies for fireworks on the Fourth of July this weekend. Here’s your reminder to keep your pets inside — this heat is too much for our furry friends.

While it might be a little too hot to soak up the sun today, you know what you can do while inside with the AC running? Read all about the local headlines in today’s newsletter. Plus, we’re revealing The Incline’s Ultimate Pittsburgh Brewery Bracket, made with 32 of YOUR nominations!

So this is the part where we ask you, Pittsburgh: Which of these 32 crisp, tall, and foamy breweries should make it to our Sweet Sixteen Round? We write the news — you choose the brews.

3 things to know today

😷 Pennsylvanians can take the masks off. As of Monday, Gov. Tom Wolf’s COVID-19 mask mandate has officially ended. Though the state’s mandate is no longer, private establishments can continue to require masks. And those still unvaccinated are still encouraged to wear masks. (90.5 WESA)

  • Related: That being said, medical officials are still urging both those vaccinated and unvaccinated people to remain cautious of the virus with the influx of the Delta variant. (NPR)

💵 Peduto and the Pittsburgh council released the proposed plan for $335 million in federal relief money. The plan is to use about 70% to make up for revenue losses. The proposal was created by the mayor’s office and the Pittsburgh Recovery Task Force and budgets the cash through 2024 with a focus to “use a racial equity lens.” The proposal will be introduced to the city council today and then go through a public hearing. (TribLIVE

🚌 Port Authority will increase fares starting in 2022, including buses, light rail, and inclines. The changes will also eliminate the 25-cent discount and $1 transfer fees for ConnectCard users. Cash fares will remain the same and not receive any transfers with that fee. Weekly and monthly passes will also see changes. (Pittsburgh City Paper)

3 things to make you smile

🎨 The busiest Pittsburgh bus stop reopens with a new look by artist Janel Young. The new design, “Respect the Space”, was created to help tackle pandemic-challenges and promote safety at the Smithfield and Sixth Avenue Downtown stop. (Pittsburgh City Paper)

🎥 Zombies are returning to Monroeville Mall to celebrate Living Dead Weekend. This weekend, the annual zombie celebration will pay tribute to two 1985 horror films, “Day of the Dead” and “The Return of the Living Dead.” This will include cast reunions, panel discussions, photo ops, venders, screenings, and more. (NEXTPittsburgh)

  • Related: Romero's short film "Amusement Park" (available on Shudder) contains rare footage of a bygone local theme park, West View Park. For most the the 20th century, West View Park was a competitor to Kennywood, but was demolished in the 1980s to make room for a shopping center. (Pittsburgh Magazine)

🎭 It’s finally showtime as the Pittsburgh Public Theater reopens its curtains. The O’Reilly Theater has announced its return for the 2021-2022 season with five shows beginning in October. The first show will kick off with a virtual film while the following four will be in-person performances. (Pittsburgh City Paper)

🍻Meet The Ultimate Pittsburgh Brewery Bracket Nominees

You all came in clutch with the nominations for the Ultimate Pittsburgh Brewery!

More than 40 breweries were nominated, and even if some of our favorites didn't make the cut, The Incline readers votes matter most!

Here’s what you had to say about five of the fine breweries that made the cut, and why they deserve the title of being Pittsburgh’s Ultimate Brewery:

Grist House

"Every time I go there, it’s like Gristmas morning. The perfect atmosphere with a patio, fire pits, and dogs as far as I can see, but the beer is what steals my heart. Every IPA they create is my next new favorite."

East End Brewing Co.

"It was one of the first, if not THE first, microbrewery in the area and still produces a wide range of outstanding beers and ales. It paved the way for all the breweries that have followed. They also sponsor and participate in many programs and events which help our community and the people who live here. And they do it all with a sense of humor. Scott Smith didn't start with a ton of money and a big, splashy brew pub. It started small and humble and grew organically. It's not the biggest or fanciest, and maybe not even the best, microbrewery in the area, but it is the most authentic."

Roundabout Brewery

"The brewery is run by a husband and wife team that started the brewery from basically nothing: no outside investment and some refurbished dairy equipment that they use to produce really high quality brews. They make interesting and unique beer that goes beyond your typical American IPA (or Hazy IPA, for that matter). It's exactly the kind of shop that I like to support."

Lincoln Avenue Brewing

"More than just a brewery, it is a community gathering spot and many members of the community helped to build it with the owners. Bellevue was a dry town until December, 2015, so LAB represents a new chapter in Bellevue's story."

Strange Roots

"Just try the tart burst banana berry sour or the experimental peanut butter and jelly sour, and you’ll know why they should win it all!"

And that’s just a taste of the entries. So tell us, Pittsburgh, which of these 32 breweries should make it to our Sweet Sixteen Round?

As the state reopens and more folks get vaccinated, there are plenty of chances to grab some suds with your buds. This makes July the perfect time to celebrate the alchemical wizards creating these quaffable creations.

As a reminder, this March Madness-style bracket was decided by our readers, for our readers. So use this opportunity to revisit some of your favorite Pittsburgh breweries (and maybe try some new ones!) and then tell us which of the 32 should advance to the Sweet Sixteen?

Voting for this round ends at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 7. Cast your vote below by following this link — and share it with a friend, too!
