☀️ Beating the heat: No clothes necessary

Plus: Local hard seltzers you have to try.

By Grace Madigan

Happy Tuesday, Seattle.

Why “happy”? Because for the first time in a few days, we will NOT see three-digit temperatures. 🤪

Hopefully, you all managed the extreme heat and kept yourself and your pets safe and healthy. The unprecedented heat and lack of AC resulted in tons of people flocking to the water. Including myself

Some friends and I ended up going to Denny Blaine, which if you didn’t know, is a nude beach — a detail I didn’t remember when the idea was thrown out for consideration. However, any sense of hesitation on my part was quickly erased when my feet hit the water. (For the record, I opted to keep my bathing suit on.) Plus, it being Pride weekend, there was a sense of celebration and camaraderie among the beach goers. This was a place where you feel comfortable in your own skin — literally.

Last thing about Denny Blaine and then I swear we'll get to today's news: I found this old article from KUOW which discussed the fact that it’s totally legal to be nude in Seattle any time, anywhere. You can’t flash people and make them uncomfortable, but you can technically go to any public park and be naked and not worry about being arrested. How’s that for a fun fact for ya?

Have your own memories or stories from Denny Blaine? I want to hear them! Hit reply to the email and share ‘em. Keep on scrolling for the headlines.

4 things Seattle is talking about

🏡  Housing is at the front of everyone’s minds these days. Here’s how the mayoral candidates think the city should grow: Andrew Grant Houston thinks the city should allow up to eight units on every housing lot, M. Lorena González wants Seattle to be a 15-minute city, and Jessyn Farrell says the city should add 70,000 affordable units by 2030. (The Seattle Times)

🍗  The tale of Ezell’s famous chicken. Did you know that the namesake of Ezell’s broke off and started his own chain after a dispute over which direction the company should go? Ezell Stephens and Lewis Rudd opened their original location in 1984 at 23rd and Jefferson, right across from Garfield High School. It was a success, but their attempts to grow and expand were plagued by red-lining. Read the feature from food writer, Naomi Tomky, to get the whole story. (Seattle PI)

💦  Here’s what the weekend’s heat wave looked like around Seattle. Besides the historic heat wave, Capitol Hill saw a number of Pride festivities including street karaoke on Sunday. Capitol Hill Seattle Blog captured the neighborhood as it tried to stay cool and celebrate. South Seattle Emerald also sent out a photographer to take pictures of folks taking refuge in Lake Washington.

🍺  Put down the White Claw, and pick up one of these local hard seltzers. The market for alcoholic alternatives to beer that can be enjoyed on a hot summer day grew 800% in 2020 from what it was in 2018. Local companies have taken note and hopped on board the seltzer train including Rainier, Reuben’s Brews, and Schilling Cider. (Seattle Met)
