Announcing AdvanTx

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is launching an initiative to create the Advance Therapeutics (AdvanTx) team which will serve as a centralized resource for faculty to engage to develop therapeutic-related research and development projects.

Interest in projects is agnostic to therapeutic modality and includes small molecules, biologics, gene therapy and others. Researchers who express interest in engaging in a confidential discussion with the AdvanTx team will receive general feedback about the feasibility of the project.

Projects or ideas that are deemed to have significant potential will also receive the following benefits:

  • Mentorship: Scientific support will be provided to develop a therapeutic target concept or project.
  • Translation: Support will be provided to access and coordinate resources and funding through UNC and external organizations
  • IP support: For programs at an appropriate stage of development, help will be provided to assess, protect, and commercialize intellectual property accordingly in collaboration with the Office of Technology Commercialization.

Researchers with interesting ideas are welcome to access the AdvanTx submission portal.

The AdvanTx site will also track current funding opportunities relevant to therapeutics space.  Those may be found here.

Tips, Tools, and Training

Join us in a monthly, virtual training session for a deep-dive into a special topic in finding and securing funding.
This month's session will be held 7/23 10:00-11:00 and is a training session on "translating" NIH and NSF funding announcement application instructions into writing outlines.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS - Translational Research Grant (TRG)

DEADLINE: Wednesday, August 25, 2021 (noon)
Translational Research Grant (TRG) Cycle 1The TRG program funds research projects that explore potential commercial applications or initiate the early commercial development of university-held life sciences inventions. The technology must have the potential to solve a real-world problem as a commercial product in the life sciences sector. Proposals will be evaluated on the composition of the project team that includes a project manager; the setting of relevant, realistic, and achievable project milestones; and the likelihood that the project will directly contribute to the subsequent licensing and further commercial development of the technology.

Up to $100,000 may be requested for the technical and business development activities; an additional $10,000 supplement is available to support a project manager if one is not available through the applicant institution.Pre-submission consultations are strongly recommended. Contact information is included in the program guidelines posted at ncbiotech.org/trg.

The New Limited Submissions and Awards Management System

The Limited Submissions and Awards team is pleased to announce the launch of LAMSES (Limited Awards Management-Support Enterprise System) the new system to apply for limited submission and award opportunities.  In addition to being a single destination for researchers to submit proposals for internal review, the system is also set up to host reviewer comments and feedback, and will eventually integrate with RAMSeS to help build out a robust institutional data picture.  We’ve assembled documentation for reviewers available at the Limited Submissions and Awards website, but if you have any questions during the launch of this system, please don’t hesitate to reach out to limited_submission@unc.edu.

 A Convergent Code

An interdisciplinary team of Carolina scientists is rewriting faulty instructions in genomes to treat genetic diseases without changing the DNA itself.

Brian Strahl, interim chair and professor of biochemistry and biophysics at the UNC School of Medicine, and Samantha Pattenden, associate professor at the Eshelman School of Pharmacy, are combining their expertise in chemical biology and epigenetics through a collaboration known as the Chemical Epigenomics Hub. Their common goal: identify, develop and apply chemical tools to better understand epigenetic processes, ultimately improving the treatment of human disease.
