A Guide for Data Worker Internships

Since our founding back in 2013, ODI has always had two major strands of workone focused on building data literacy skills in the classroom, and the other focused on building the data workforce. A key approach to bridging the gap between school and work is the internship, through which employers can gain access to prospective employees with low cost and little risk; and students can gain invaluable hands-on experience in a field of interest in order to help shape their education and career goals. Viewed from any angle, it is a win-win situation!

Working in collaboration with Columbus State Community College and a variety of employers in the Columbus, Ohio area, ODI’s Joe Ippolito and Joyce Malyn-Smith have created a Guide for Data Worker Internships, to help employers who are considering the possibility of launching an internship program for data-intensive positions.

The guide is organized into five sections and an appendix. Each section provides guidance and resources to help design and implement an internship in data work. These include a case study of Nationwide’s Internships for Future Data Workers program, as well as sections that give guidance on deciding whether to initiate an internship program, identifying intern responsibilities, evaluating internship performance, and structuring the internship.

At the end of the Guide is an Appendix which includes a variety of rubrics and evaluation tools that employers can use to assess the performance and skills gained by their interns. These tools are based on ODI’s Profile of the Data Practitioner, in which we worked with data industry experts to identify duties, tasks, skills, knowledge, and behaviors associated with middle skills data jobswhich might reasonably be expected of college-level interns.

Whether you are an employer thinking about starting an internship program for data-intensive jobs, or an instructor or administrator thinking about working with regional employers to offer data internships for your students, we think you will find this guide interesting and useful. We'd love to hear if it helps you build a successful internship program!

Best Wishes,
