#1. AMA Stands in Solidarity with the Indigenous Peoples

Today is a time to reflect, acknowledge, honour and stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples.

At AMA, we are profoundly saddened by the discovery of 182 unmarked graves close to the former St. Eugene’s Mission School near Cranbrook, B.C., that was reported by the Lower Kootenay Band of the Ktunaxa Nation. The discovery adds to a rising tally of unmarked grave sites across Canada.

The AMA community stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities as we remember the survivors of the residential school system, and with the families of those whose children never returned to them. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragic finding.

Let us take the time today to educate ourselves about the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples and their history. Through education and acknowledgement of history we can be true supporters of positive change for the Indigenous People and other racialized communities. Through education we can take an active role in reconciliation and elimination of systemic racism and discrimination as a meaningful course of action.

Here is an educational resource we do recommend: click here.

Racism has no place in any civilized society, and we, as a Muslim community experiencing Islamophobia, must stand against racism in any shape or form inside or outside our communities. The Prophet (SAW) has said:

“Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith.”

Hadith 34, 40 Hadith an-Nawawi
