It’s been nearly a decade since cashless tolling became the norm in Central Texas. The benefits – reducing emissions and fatalities while saving drivers time – are significant components to keeping our region moving.
And with this shift came the use of electronic tags. Electronic tags are small, wireless devices you mount on your windshield so you can pay tolls through the electronic toll collection systems on roadways. That’s right –
drivers save up to 33 percent simply by having an active tag account. Because there are multiple toll road operators across the state, without a tag, drivers could receive multiple, separate pay-by-mail bills depending on which roads they use.
Whether you’re a frequent or occasional toll road driver, getting an electronic tag is the simplest, most cost-effective way to pay tolls. Mobility Authority customers have several tag options to choose from –
So which is the right one for you?
TollTag
The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) manages most of the toll roads in the North Texas area, but their electronic tag, TollTag, can be used on any Texas toll road and beyond. TollTag is a prepaid account that can be set up for as little as $20. TollTag customers can monitor their account via the
online Customer Service System or the
Tollmate app.
TollTag also offers users the ability to customize their TollTag with a specialty tag featuring pro and collegiate sports teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Stars, Dallas Mavericks, Texas Longhorns, and many more.
EZ TAG
The Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) offers two convenient options, the traditional EZ TAG and EZ TAG Express, that take the hassle out of paying for tolls throughout Texas. Like the other tag options, the traditional
EZ TAG account is a pre-paid account created online that requires a physical electronic tag.
If you drive on toll roads less frequently, however, EZ TAG Express may be the best option for you. The account is created and managed on the
mobile app. The account can only be used for one vehicle at a time, but purchasing a physical tag is not required. Users pay the non-tag toll rate but are able to maintain and manage a prepaid account.
TxTag
Operated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), TxTag works across Texas and beyond. With a single TxTag account, all tolls are prepaid and multiple vehicles in the account holder’s household can be included. TxTag customers can check toll transactions and account balance or make payments to their account online or by phone.
Make it even easier by enrolling in AutoPay which charges your card or bank account when your TxTag account drops below a preset low balance threshold. Tag holders can also opt-in to receive alerts via text message when they have a low balance or credit card decline.
