The Shelter Scoop

June 2021 Volunteer Newsletter from Centre County PAWS

Hello <<First Name>>!

We’ve been open again to the public for about 1 month. We are still finding our footing with managing the extended hours, and I am very appreciative of all the volunteers who are helping in that process. I’m also always in awe of our dog walkers this time of year, who brave the hot and humid weather to ensure our dogs get adequate exercise. The reality is everyone is staying busy and everyone is a vital piece of our puzzle here.

Best,

Lisa Bahr
Executive Director

Around the Shelter

PAWS Memorial Patio

The PAWS Memorial Patio build is complete! We are so excited to show it off this Sunday, July 4. Thank you to everyone who RSVP’d. We have a whopping 105 guests coming, so be sure to follow parking instructions when you arrive and closely read your email from Alicia in advance of the event.

Pool Season

The dogs are absolutely loving their baby pools and new troughs subbing as pools. Ruby even got to try out the sprinkler yesterday and was very impressed. Check out this fun, silly video of Samantha Bee living it up at the PAWS Beach!

Patio Party

Mark your calendars for our first ever PAWS Patio Party on Saturday, August 28 from 5:30PM-8:30PM. There will be delicious food and drinks, live entertainment, adoptable animals, an online silent auction, raffle and more!
Stay tuned to our social media for additional information!

New Volunteer Trainings

After a long lull of not having training during COVID, we now have numerous opportunities for people to get involved. Dog Volunteers may now do their first step of training online or, those who are not sure they can physically handle our dogs could be well suited to serving as a Facilities Volunteer.
We are also in need of additional Front Desk volunteers to try and cover our expanded hours.

Dr. John Thomas VET Fund

The VET Fund has launched and has officially assisted its first client. Baby (pictured) is a semi-feral adult cat who had a prolapsed rectum. Thanks to the VET Fun, she received surgery for the repair and is recovering with her doting mom. This is a great example of exactly the type of situation we want to help!

Volunteer of the Month: Mary Smith

This month’s featured volunteer is Mary Smith. We decided to highlight Mary because she is currently fostering a litter of kittens who have ringworm. Our cat fosters and volunteers reading this probably all did an audible “eek” at that, because it’s a lot of work. Mary has taken it on and is doing an amazing job. She is on a little vacation right now and the kittens are at PAWS, but will be headed back to her next week. Thank you for your hard work, Mary!

The Volunteer of the Month gets a blog feature on our website and their very own parking space! The Volunteer of the Month also gets a naming opportunity for a new PAWS animal. The Volunteer of the Month can be anyone who logged hours during the previous month or a volunteer who has logged 1,500 hours. The volunteer will be contacted via email. If a youth volunteer wins, their parent or guardian will be able to use the parking space. Make sure to log your hours!

Happy Updates

Love following up on our furry friends? Lots of our adopters check back in and while we can't post them all here, we post them on our Facebook page.
"Leo recently went to his new home and is clearly making himself feel quite at home!"
"We are so happy that we adopted Rex (formally Motley). My daughter’s nick name is “T” and since she picked him we thought “T-Rex” was fitting. He’s such a pleasant dog and is so incredibly sweet! He’s learning quickly, almost house broken and he walks perfectly on a leash. Everyone loves him and he’s had so many doggie play dates."
"Minnie (white/black cat) and Venus (tortie) were recently adopted together (now Willow and Flower). So far, they’re doing wonderfully! Flower loves all her toys, tunnels, and scratching posts and Willow is loving all the cuddles and attention she’s been getting! My grandfather couldn’t be happier than he is now with his two new furry friends!"
"Ashley has adjusted so well since we adopted her. She’s been nothing but a wonderful addition to the family. She loves playing fetch, tug and cuddling with all of us including our other cat fur baby Khaleesi."

Happy June Birthday!
