2021 Geoff McMurchy Artist Development Grant Recipient Announcement
We're pleased to introduce you to
Adele ᒪᐢᑿᓱᐏᐢᑵᐤ Arseneau!
A disabled Nehiyaw/Métis visual artist, Adele creates work around storytelling and engages the audience to consider cultural appropriation, along with social and environmental issues. Her intent is to educate from an indigenous perspective and counteract current stereotypes.
“My work is all about stories. We are our stories we hear and tell each other, this is our world. My culture put emphasis on stories, now I’m trying to tell them to you in a bright, colourful and contemporary way. This is my language, these are my stories. “

Kickstart Disability Arts & Culture is thrilled to present the solo exhibition “Constructed Identities” by Persimmon Blackbridge, one of Canada’s most recognized Artists that identifies as living with a disability.
Constructed Identities, a major show of work by Persimmon Blackbridge, uses mixed media wood carving with found objects to question how disability is framed as a fracturing of ordinary life rather than a normal, expected part of it. Her exploration of the figure begins in disability, but necessarily complicates itself as our embodied identities intersect and overlap.

Our First Conversation
In conjunction with 2021 BC Culture Days celebration
Throughout time and various cultures, a conversation pit has been a physical space that has provided a place to rest, reflect, socialize, and plan. Reaching its maximum popularity in North America during the 1970s and 80s, its prominence in public spaces has faded, but its importance in being a needed platform for idea exchange and respite has not.
Under the guidance of Yuri Arajs, Artistic Director at Outsiders and Others, and with the support of BC Culture Days, artist August Bramhoff will be curating their first on-line art exhibition. The show will be hosted at the virtual arts space theconversationpit.ca.
Entitled Our First Conversation, the exhibition theme will focus on how we see ourselves moving forward in a post-pandemic society. With the pause that was created during the Covid shutdowns, we have a limited-time opportunity to express how everyday systems we rely on should look, feel, operate-and serve.
