STABLE, A Contemporary Visual Arts Community in Eckington, Reintroduces Itself to the District

When you enter the exhibition space at Stable, the exposed wood beams and vaulted ceilings serve as a reminder that the structure was at one time, in fact, a working horse stable. But the name reflects something even more subtle about the organization's purpose - to provide sustainable and reliable studio space for artists in Washington, DC.

Launched in 2019, Stable, a 501(c)3 non-profit located at 336 Randolph Place NE, functions as part gallery space, part studio complex for the contemporary visual arts community. The 25+ artists who currently occupy the studio spaces represent a diverse cohort of creatives whose works range from abstract sculptures, graphite drawings, and collage, to murals, large-scale public installations, and more. As a studio space, Stable provides below market rate spaces for artists of all visual arts disciplines. As a community, Stable seeks to bridge the gap between the local arts scene and professional opportunities and exposure.

Though the gallery space was closed during the pandemic, the studios remained open for their occupants to carry on their craft. Now, after being closed to the public for more than a year, Stable is excited to reintroduce itself to the District and welcome patrons back with its latest exhibit, Shoulder the Deed. Launched this past Friday in collaboration with Black Artists of DC, Shoulder the Deed is aptly named to reflect the exhibit’s desire to bear the responsibility for sustaining and uplifting the arts community in Eckington, and to honor its legacy.

What’s happening outside of Stable is equally as exciting as what’s happening inside. New and vibrant murals are visible from Eckington's Metropolitan Branch Trail for cyclists, walkers, and runners to appreciate. These pieces were designed by Zimbabwean-born artist and educator Nontsi Mutiti, whose images and iconography reflect Black culture, shared ancestry, and historic power dynamics.

Shoulder the Deed is available to view on Fridays and Saturdays from 12 to 6 pm; registration is not required. The exterior murals are accessible any time of day. Head over and check out these outstanding works of art located right here in our neighborhood!

Tips on Tanner Park

We often receive questions and comments from community members. Based on some common themes, we've included a few tips on Tanner Park below.

1.  Interested in holding your own event, party, workout class, or sports game at Tanner Park? Anything that involves 10 or more people requires a permit through DC's Department of Parks and Recreation. Community members can apply for a permit online!

2.  EP&A handles cleaning and waste bag supply for the dog park, but larger maintenance issues still require the assistance of DC's Department of Parks and Recreation and Department of General Services. We keep an eye on issues and submit requests as they arise, but community input can also help get things done faster! We invite you to submit your own reports of existing and new issues to the Department of General Services. Please also shoot us a quick email to let us know so we can monitor the issue for resolution.

3.  Be sure to check out our (mostly) fixed bulletin boards at the dog park often for EP&A information, dog park rules, and event announcements! We will also soon be posting information near the picnic tables in Tanner Park to reach more of the community.

Greenways Cleanups and Green-ups

Help keep our community clean this Spring! Eckington Parks' Greenways Committee and Eckington Civic Association host cleanups twice a month. Because of the 4th of July holiday weekend, we will be shifting this month's cleanups to July 10 and 19, 9am-12 pm. Whether you have 20 minutes or 2 hours, grab a trash bag and walk your block - or head to Tanner Park - to show Eckington some love. Say hello to your neighbors, and tag us in photos on social media (@EckingtonParks) while you clean!

Can't make it out on Saturday? That's okay! Find another time that works for you - because every little bit helps keep Eckington beautiful. Need a trash bag or want to say hello? Check social media and Nextdoor to find out when we'll be at the park handing out supplies! For neighbors on the volunteer path to membership - cleanup hours count toward required volunteer hours! Submit your Volunteer Hours Tracking Form for credit.

Help our community go green this Summer! Our Greenways Committee offers quick tips in each newsletter on how to support your garden and our urban natural world. For the month of July, consider giving flowers and newly planted trees and shrubs some extra water and attention. And don't forget to water your street trees! Surrounded by pavement and concrete, they often struggle to gather enough water due to runoff.
