Meet a WE Biker: Crystal Rangel

Every volunteer brings something special to our organization. And WE count on them—whether they’re leading our rides, writing our newsletters, responding to mail, building our website. This month's volunteer is Crystal Rangel. Get to know Crystal here!

What was your first WE Bike NYC ride?
I'm pretty sure it was a donut shop tour. We hit up three shops: Dunwell, Dough, and ended at Peter Pan. I am always up for a food ride!!

What’s your favorite route?
I have a different commute now, but I used to ride along the Hudson River Greenway to get to work and that morning ride north along that path was always the best part of my day, especially riding by the Intrepid. My dad was in the Navy so I always think of him when I ride past.

What do you ride?
I ride a sky blue Brooklyn Bicycle Co. Willow 3. It has the same 3-speed internal gear system as the first Citi Bikes and, when I load all my stuff onto it, is almost as heavy as a Citi Bike, ha!

Why do you love WE Bike NYC?
I love WE Bike NYC because it showed me that there were other people like me biking around the city. Before I got involved, I would see lots of spandex riders on road bikes or gnarly aggressive messengers, and those were 9 times out of 10, dudes. It was nice to finally meet some riders I could relate to. Not just because WE were women/female-identifying/gender-nonconforming, but because there were also WE Bike riders of all different riding styles, including more leisurely like me.

Bike Tip of the Month

This month's video is: Fitting a (Praxis) bottom bracket.  Join YouTuber Kajsa Tylen in her journey to perform her own bike maintenance. Hopefully you'll find it as down-to-earth and entertaining as WE did!
