WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING?
WELCOME JOANNE!
Ko Joanne Noanoa taku ingoa
Ko Cross te whanau
He uri ahau o Ngai Tahu
Tēnā koutou tēnā koutou tēnā koutou katoa
Aoraki Matatu!!

We warmly welcome Joanne Noanoa to the Number 10 Board. Joanne is the representative of the Waihopai Rūnaka
, providing cultural awhi (help) to the Board. Her whakapapa is to Ngai Tahu.
Joanne was born to be an educator and get the best for young people. She has been involved in almost every primary school in Invercargill as well as kura kaupapa and supporting kohanga reo. Her work is based around manaaki (extending respect and hospitality to others in a way that upholds their mana and enhances your own) and whanaungatanga (close kinship), and she feels that Number 10 is an excellent fit for her skill set and passion. She is looking forward to the opportunity to network and be within the conversations extending the world of manaaki (support) to whānau (families) and rangatahi (young people). She considers it a privilege to straddle the world of mainstream and Māori, and is looking forward to her work with Number 10.
RANGATAHI SPORTS TOURNAMENT 2021
The 12th of May saw 79 young people from 7 Alternative Education Organisations come together with Number 10 staff and 47 volunteers at Stadium Southland.  It was an awesome day!  Check out the video highlights.
NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK 2021
Volunteering has been part of Number 10's DNA since it's inception 13 years ago.  This year we acknowledge all the amazing volunteers involved with Number 10 - whether the fantastic people who come to Deveron St and give of their skills and time, or the staff who work at Number 10 and volunteer out in the community.

GROUP PROGRAMMES
TŌ MĀTOU HĪKOI
New to Number 10, Tō Mātou Hīkoi (Our Journey) has been exploring belonging, and celebrating culture.  Facilitator Nancy, who came to New Zealand from Mexico brought along some traditional tacos for one session - introducing the group to the amazing flavours!! The group have been exploring identity- who we are, what shapes our values, and what's important to people as unique individuals.  Storytelling as a way to share our culture with others is core to the programme.
CREATIVE ARTS GROUP Term 2
Creative Arts have had an ecclectic Term 2, with various projects on the go such as skateboard decorating, sketching, stencil work and Street Art!
WOOLCRAFT GROUP Term 2
It's been a slow start to Woolcraft Group, with small numbers of young people.  The group is designed to be a place for young people who may be struggling with mental health or social anxiety to come along, be in a supportive environment, try a new craft skill (or hone an existing one) and be encouraged.  Facilitator Vanessa is also one of our nurses, and she is passionate about young people and supporting them in their mental health journey.  Please help to spread the word about the programme!
E14E Term 2
E14E have had a great term- building friendships and confidence, as well as their sense of identity as a group and individuals, all in a safe and fun environment.  Highlights have been the education nights, fun challenges, and celebrating Pink Shirt Day and Pride Month (check out the amazing cake made by the mum of one of the young people!).

RANGATAHI SPORTS TOURNAMENT
It's been a hard 15 months for local businesses, so we were blown away by the support from many of them for the recent Rangatahi Sports Tournament.  Big or small, every donation of food, prizes or an employee's time so they could volunteer was hugely appreciated!
Nā tō rourou, nā taku rourou ka ora ai te iwi- With your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive!
SPORT SOUTHLAND -  Manawa Fund
Huge thank you to Sports Southland and the Tū Manawa Fund for community-based programmes and projects helping young people get more active. A grant of $4,933 supported us to deliver the Rangatahi Sports event this year.
SOUTHLAND LIFE EDUCATION TRUST
Thanks also go to The Southland Life Education Trust who donated us two copies recently of 'The Great Brain Robbery' by Tom Scott & Trevor Brice.  This is an excellent resource book that covers "what everyone should know about teenagers and drugs".  The books are currently on our waiting room table for people to dip into while waiting for their appointments.
ROTARY CLUB OF INVERCARGILL EAST
The Rotary Club of Invercargill East has generously supported our boys' group over the years, and this year was no exception. Boys' group is an annual 5-day school holiday programme that provides an opportunity for boys to explore, learn, develop and enhance their journey to becoming great men. With help from our local Rotarians, we can deliver these amazing high value programmes to our rangatahi.
