What's next on your BUCKET LIST?

We are seeking 10 eager movers & shakers to support our watering efforts this summer!

There is always two sides to a story: Greening our natural spaces with thousands of new native plants each year is one thing Greenways does. Keeping our wee photosynthesizing friends alive to see them thrive and mature is another! While in some years, we barely have to water at all, this week’s bonkers heat wave has kicked off what is likely to be a busy watering season ahead if we are to keep alive most of the thousands of plants we have planted over the past few years.  Because Greenways mostly works to restore urban sites that have marginal soil conditions and poor water retention capacity, keeping these sites watered is of the utmost importance to keeping our plants alive in their most fragile first 2-3 years while their root systems are being established.

JOIN IN
Please consider joining our watering crew! Katie, Greenways' Community Engagement Coordinator, will connect with you regarding a convenient location and the logistics. Please email her at katharine@greenwaystrust.ca.
+ The Willow Creek estuary, for example, can use an extra set of hands. Our amazing volunteer, Tom, is currently working there and he would be thrilled for some support!
+ A few school gardens in town can use some love, care and watering this summer too. Volunteers will be able to harvest some goodies while supporting a good cause for the benefit of the students who will return to well maintained garden plots in September. One example is the school garden at Carihi Secondary School.

WATER IS LIQUID GOLD
‘Tis the season to celebrate our green spaces by supporting them with water. Every drop helps - so let's all spread some extra full buckets where we can:

--- let's help your neighbours water their plants if they're going away on holiday,
--- water the tree in your street that otherwise would toast away or
--- bring a bucket on a walk along the river or lake and - if safe - help out some thirsty baby plants along the way.

Project Update

Food Security

Food for thought, farm to fork & we are what we eat: Greenways is pleased to have been involved in recent community work to strengthen food security both locally in Campbell River, and within the Strathcona Regional District as a whole.

On May 25, Greenways participated in a community meeting with 50 attendees - see photos above - to discuss local food security issues and potential next steps for supporting action. We shared information about our current food security programs:

+ Laughing Willow and Mountain View Community Gardens - see photo below - and Mountain View Food Forest,
+ Access to Seafood,
+ Fruit Tree Project, and
+ Strathcona Good Food Box program.

Greenways has hosted the Strathcona Food Network for several years, and we are excited to that many others interested in getting involved!

THANK YOU
Many thanks to our funder, Island Health’s Community Food Action Initiative, for their continuing support.
