Waikanae Boating Club E-News

30th June 2021
Commodore’s Committee Notes

Hi folks. Here are some of the matters discussed at the last committee meeting.

Members’ Guests.
Just a gentle reminder that we may invite the same guest(s) to the club no more than three times per year. Also a reminder that family membership extends only to children under eighteen, or who are still in the education process. Beyond that a new membership is required. The Committee makes these ‘transfers’ from one family to full membership a priority for acceptance.

Forward Payment of Building Improvement Levy.
A number of members have asked if they can pay the five year levy up front on one lot. The answer is. ‘Yes please!’ Please contact Hannah or Evie to take this matter further.

Affiliated Members.
The club’s current affiliations are with Kapiti Boating Club and Waikanae Surf Club. We have had other affiliations in the past but we have not seen any of them use our club in the last few years. We are to invite the  Kapiti Fly Fishing Club to join the list. Currently they use our club for meetings and an annual lunch. It will be nice to have some fresh water anglers in our midst from time to time. The same rules apply—affiliated member only, and no guests, and sign in on arrival.

The Galley.
There were some questions about the Galley at the AGM. Here is the Committee’s response.
  • We must be able to serve substantial meals as a requirement of our liquor licence.
  • We are fortunate that the club is able to retain high quality food services from our current lessee, Al, who provides excellent meals at reasonable prices. The fact that the dining area is booked out so often is testament to this.
  • Only members and their guests may use the Galley, or indeed visit the club at all. The Committee and our bar staff are all satisfied that this process works really well.
  • The only way the club can support the Galley is by keeping our charges low but still sufficient to cover our outgoings for the Galley. We will continue to take this reasonable approach.
  • The club benefits enormously from the sales of wine (in particular) purchased by Galley patrons. In fact, since our relationship with the Galley commenced the club has built up to a regular profit of more than $50,000 per year.
