Last day to register for Settled Status

Today is the deadline for EU nationals living in the UK to register for "Settled Status" to guarantee their rights after Brexit. Many people have not yet done so - if you are an EU natiional or know someone who is, please make sure they have registered: https://www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families/applying-for-settled-status
Recycling and Waste Update

The recycling collection in Blagdon recently has not been good enough, with residents rightly upset at missed collections and bins not being properly returned. I have taken this up with senior managers and have been assured the issues have been addressed with the teams. Much of the drop in service quality is due to the current lack of HGV drivers in the country - with supervisors now having to drive the trucks rather than oversee the service. If you experience issues with bin collections, do let me know so I can make sure problems are sorted out.
Update on Airport Planning Appeal

The planning inspectors inquiry into the Bristol Airport planning appeal will commence at 10:00 on Tuesday 20 July 2021.

The inquiry will take place in the Town Hall, but members of the public are requested to follow along online, to ensure the event takes place in a covid secure way. Links to watch will be posted closer to the time at: www.n-somerset.gov.uk/airportappeal.

While members of the public do not have an automatic legal right to speak, arrangements to do so can be put in place if a request is put to the inspectors up front (via Joanna Vincent – joanna.vincent@gateleyhamer.com).

Background documents can be found at: https://gateleyhamer-pi.com/en-gb/bristol-airport/

The inquiry is planned to last 40 days.
Your views wanted on new recycling strategy

North Somerset Council is seeking your views on updating its recycling and waste strategy.

"We only have one planet - and all waste needs to go somewhere. Our recycling and waste strategy sets out how North Somerset can reduce waste and how we can value natural resources by encouraging reuse, repair and recycling.

In 2019/20 we achieved a recycling rate of 60.6%, placing us in the top 10 councils in England and the best performing council in the South West. Despite our high recycling rate, our waste analysis of 250 households found 45% of the average household black bin is made up of items which could be recycled during weekly recycling collections.

Our long-term mission is to achieve a ‘zero waste’ North Somerset, where resource use and waste production is minimised, and repair and reuse is increased. We must think of waste as being something we value and should be recovered."

Consultation on works to improve the A38

North Somerset and Somerset County Council are working with Department for Transport to deliver a number of improvements along the A38 to support active travel, improve safety and reduce congestion.
In our patch, there are plans to improve safety along the Redhill stretch and to improve walking and cycling infrastructure in Langford.

You can see the proposals - and share your thoughts - here: https://www.a38mrn-engagement.com/

From my point of view, I welcome improvements to the A38 - and we need to grab any central government funds available - but I will be pushing officers to make sure that this work is coordinated with other projects such as the Banwell bypass project and the overall active travel strategy.

Balloons to take to North Somerset Skies

North Somerset Council is supporting the Exclusive Cup Balloon Competition across our local skies this summer. We'll see:

  • balloons take off from secret locations across North Somerset at dawn

  • pilots compete to be the first to drop their markers on targets set in open countryside

  • the launch sites and date of the event kept under wraps to remain within covid guidelines so that the competition can proceed safely

  • we're supporting Exclusive Ballooning to bring the mass balloon event to North Somerset

The launch sites will be shared once the pilots are in the air so you can enjoy the special shapes, colours and sizes from your front room.

Covid-19 Update

Recorded cases of coronavirus have increased in North Somerset, with infection rates increasing more quickly in particular parts of the area.

The Public Health, licensing and food and safety teams have been providing focused support to the affected communities to make sure measures are in place to reduce the risk of further transmission.

As well as stepping up visits to settings in the area, which included the villages of Abbots Leigh, Pill and Easton-in-Gordano, to give advice and support, we also diverted our mobile testing unit. This offers rapid no-symptom testing to help find people who may be infectious with Covid without any symptoms.

105 new cases have been identified in the latest seven-day period reported for North Somerset compared with 38 in the previous week. Our case rate per 100,000 head of population has increased to 48.8. This compares with a South West figure of 46.7, and an England rate of 75.2.
