Carer Consultation - Psychiatric Emergency Plan (PEP)

Lanarkshire’s Psychiatric Emergency Plan is currently being reviewed and we are asking for your views to ensure the voice of carers is heard and has influence in shaping the plan.

In partnership, Lanarkshire Carers and Lanarkshire Links would like to invite carers to share their experience, if the person you care for has been subject to detention (sectioned) under mental health legislation.

The Psychiatric Emergency Plan is a multiagency “best practice” guideline that sets out clear and concise guidance for staff who may be involved in the detention of persons under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 as amended by Mental Health (Scotland) Act 2015. The guidance addresses the key responsibilities and the procedures that should be followed in an emergency psychiatric situation.

If the person you care for becomes unwell with a mental illness, they may need treatment. In some cases, the person may refuse treatment, they then may be detained or 'sectioned'. This means they will have to spend time in hospital, even if they do not want to.

The information you provide will be forwarded to NHS Lanarkshire to inform a review to the Psychiatric Emergency Plan (Multi- agency “best practice” guidelines).

This information will be gathered anonymously, so please do not put any names in the answers. By sharing your experiences both positive and negative is how we shape services for the future.
