News from the network

Landscape wide is community wide

We all network 'landscape wide' as neighbours, from Little Muddy Creek
to Wood Bay to work within our wider neighbourhood to:
- build neighbourhood enthusiasm for restoration
- regenerate our native bush through controlling invasive weeds
- create wildlife safe havens through pest control

Your local business are neighbourhood businesses. Do you own / operate a local business and have an interest in supporting local ecological restoration?  If you, or your business supports STNN’s purpose, and would like to contribute, we would love to hear from you.

Planting Day

Titirangi Beach Project - Sunday 27 June

It was a rainy old Auckland morning on Sunday, 27 June. We didn’t let this hold up our Titirangi Beach planting day! With a healthy turn out of 30 able bodied diggers and planters (and some support crew) and the very helpful NZ Biosecurity Services to man the BBQ and help with set up.
We had 415 plants to be planted along the stream to the right of the parking / toilet area. This was further planting along the stream, as it has been cleared and planted over the past five years. This has helped to create a native planting, and support the cleaning up of the stream.

Rat Hotels

A community building day

A fantastic community activity was held at Tony’s home. Building ‘Rat Hotels’ for maximising our rat and mouse trapping ability.
Armed with drills, screws, hammers and nails we had a group of young people to put together around 30 rat/mouse hotels. The team were very enthusiastic and quick with their work. Quickly piling up the hotels ready to be stencilled, loaded and taken into the bush to combat the rat and mouse predator issue.
Great work everyone!

Get the kids involved.

Being part of STNN from a kids' perspective.

Being a part of STNN doesn't need to be left to grown-ups. There is plenty to get the kids involved with. And a huge part of the motivation is to pass forward our native bush in better shape than how we found it. And why not pass this on to our children by teaching and involving them.

There are traps, weeding, planting and many other activities kids will love being a part of. Get in touch with your STNN co-ordinator to find out more or keep an eye on the STNN Facebook and website for upcoming workshops, activities and get involved in your neighbourhood.

Adie is the STNN Facilitator and as a family they are are all involved. Her 3 kids have written about why they love living in Titirangi and being involved in STNN. Be inspired, take a read

A new local has been spotted!
Have you seen (or heard) them?

Kaka's have been spotted! It's likely they've been heard first with their distinctive 'ka-ka' cry across the valley's.

It is very encouraging to hear and see more of these parrots. As we continue to work hard on pest eradication it gives space back to the native flora and fauna. Hearing the calls of these quite characterful birds through the valley is a wee indication of what the cacophony of bird song was once throughout this area (and New Zealand as a whole).

Private Weeding Bees

Do you have a section that needs help?

We are on the look-out for more local Titirangi properties to help with our 'kick start working bee'

Do you have a large property surrounding Atkinson Park (between South Titirangi Road and Titirangi Beach Road)?

Take a read how neighbours helping neighbours can mean we can work towards a pest free neighbourhood. And love our native bush!

Extra help with these weeding bees is always welcome. A couple hours a month (usually on the last Sunday of the month) or whatever you can do will help tremendously. What’s in it for you? Good humour, great exercise, and knowing you have helped return your neighbourhood to what it really should be.

Get in touch with the team!

Friendly Forest Gecko
Comes to visit

This gorgeous wee Forest Gecko made an appearance on Kate’s doorstep, possibly looking for somewhere to shelter.

They are always a treat when we get to see one of these critters as they do keep themselves well hidden, especially with their bark like colouring. They are always a good reminder of why we keep doing what we are doing. To protect all of the native critters in our beautiful local bush.

By getting rat, mice, possum, stoat, weasel numbers down we not only help our native bird populations, but all of our native critters.

Working Together
STNN Hub Meetings

Our STNN Hub Meetings happen three times a year and are when our neighbourhood and project co-ordinators come together to keep the big picture alive. These meetings are open to anyone supporting animal pest and invasive weed control across the South Titirangi peninsula.

Get in touch with your neighbourhood co-ordinator if you are interested in attending. They can let you know when the next Hub Meeting is planned.

A Massive Thank You!
To these STNN supporters

We have had the privilege of receiving some very generous donations and offers of support for the South Titirangi Neighbourhood Network. We can only be effective as a network of neighbours with support of our wider community and the neighbourhoods. We send a very big thank you and show of appreciation to these companies, families and individuals:

McAlpine-Zeman Family Support

This very generous local family has been very kind in dedicating an ongoing donation to support our community activities. These funds help us to continue to strive for a weed and predator free peninsula, making sure we are known in the neighbourhood and further educating residents. A heartfelt THANK YOU!

Ellar Graphics

Ellar Graphics is a wonderful small design business has a strong community connection, having grown up in South Titirangi. They have been very generous with their time and expertise and created our new flags, stencils and stickers to help get STNN out there, consistent and familiar with residents and the broader community.

Fix & Fogg and Pic’s Peanut Butter

Fix & Fogg and Pic’s Peanut Butter have donated us a fantastic supply of peanut butter to help support our neighbourhood with their predator free activities. Peanut butter is one of the best bait options for possums and rats (sometimes with a slice of apple to sweeten the offering). With a peanut butter supply available it becomes even simpler to bait and continue our work. Contact your local STNN coordinator if you have traps and would like a jar of peanut butter for baiting.

NZ Biosecurity Services

Thank you for your help with the BBQ and set up on our Planting Day at Titirangi Beach on Sunday 27 June. Support like this makes these planting days easier to hold and continue to support our community in their efforts.

Sponsor or Donation Opportunities
Looking for a way to donate?

Are you a business, family or individual that “loves our native bush” and everything in it? There are plenty of ways to contribute to this network of neighbours reversing ecological decline in our area. If you’d like to be involved and can help with practical matters, like funding. We are on the lookout for generous sorts to help with all that STNN does.

Big or small donations are always welcome. STNN is run by a dedicated core of neighbourhood co-ordinators, but can’t run on love alone. Support in whatever shape you can offer is always welcome, time, funds and resources will help your neighbourhood tremendously.

If you would like to find out more please get in touch with Adie on adie@fortune.org.nz

In Brief

Finding it hard to locate a weed bin? Auckland Council is generally preferring weed bags instead of bins.

Weed bags are cost efficient, and most importantly, composting on site is essential to prevent the spread of Kauri Die Back. We know that only leafy weeds go into them (not bulbs or household rubbish!).

STNN has weed bags available, please let us know if having one will help you out.

Donations

Donations for restoration and engagement projects are welcomed.

STNN's bank account number is:
Kiwi Bank 38 9018 0076960 00.

Just let us know if you need a receipt.
