Nieuwsbrief # 295. The Goon Sax, A Place To Bury Strangers, The Go! Team, Matt Sweeney & Bonnie Prince Billy. Daar heb je al vier mooie nieuwe titels. Verder weer een stel Doctor Bird reggae titels, een nieuwe Anne Soldaat en een mooie Rubinoos reissue.
Kom vooral eens langs. In principe zijn we er elke dag wel vanaf 11 uur.
Ook de bakken met tweedehands worden weer regelmatig aangevuld dus wie daar weer eens in wil neuzen, het kan weer.
Hou er bij bestellingen een beetje rekening mee dat veel titels langer op zich laten wachten dan we gewend zijn. De wachttijden in de perserijen zijn absurd lang momenteel. Kunnen we weinig aan doen helaas.

A Place To Bury Strangers – hologram
Daar is in elk geval de cd versie van de nieuwe A Place To Bury Strangers, het vinyl is helaas nogal vertraagd en komt pas in september uit. Eerste A Place To Bury Strangers op hun eigen label, Dedstrange Records. En het klinkt behoorlijk goed. “A sonic return to A Place To Bury Strangers’ rawest, most unhinged sound. With songs addressing the decay of connections, friendships lost, and the trials and tribulations of these troubled times, Hologram serves as an abstract mirror to the moment we live in. Culture – children of Zion
Maar liefst een 3cd op Doctor Bird. Wel een hele mooie. Bekend van de klassieker Two Sevens Clash, maakte Culture in de jaren daarna nog veel meer mooi spul aan het eind van de jaren ’70 voor het High Note label. ‘The first two discs of this long overdue triple CD set collect the ‘A’ and ‘B’ sides of all the group’s Jamaican 7” and 12” High Note singles, with disc 3 comprising rare and previously unreleased 12” mixes from the vaults. 20 tracks new to CD and five previously unissued, will even satisfy the exacting demands of the group’s long-standing fans.’ Hier een nummer. 3cd €25,90

2cd op Doctor Bird, oorspronkelijk uit 1968, met produkties van Joe Gibbs. “Explosive Rock Steady” was the first long-player to showcase the work of a budding record producer who in time would become one of the most popular and influential figures on the Jamaican music scene: Joel Augustus Gibson a.k.a. Joe Gibbs. The Rubinoos – the CBS tapes
Mooie release op Yep Roc. Seventies powerpop band op het legendarische Beserkley label (vooral bekend van dit hitje). Dit zijn opnames van voor hun eerste lp. Stuk primitiever en rauwer dan hun debuut lp en daarom aardig interessant. ‘Recorded at CBS Studios in San Francisco in 1976, before they were signed to the legendary Beserkley Records, The CBS Tapes captures the Rubinoos as the scrappy, bratty kids they were. It also shows the huge talent and energy of a young band near the beginning of their career, who believed they were unstoppable. This never before released recording is the perfect way to kick off the band’s 50th anniversary celebration. Anne Soldaat – facts & fears
Voor deze plaat werkte Anne Soldaat samen met Pablo van de Poel van DeWolff. Alles klinkt nog steeds als Anne Soldaat maar met een paar subtiel andere kleurtjes er door gemengd.’Ik heb ‘m min of meer de vrije hand gegeven wat betreft opnemen en mixen. Vanuit een intuïtief vertrouwen dat het goed zou komen.’ Dit vinden wij het mooiste liedje. cd €16,90 lp €24,90

Charles Mingus – Mingus at Carnegie Hall
Speciale indie 2cd versie van Mingus plaat die nu is aangevuld met de nodige extras waardoor ie een stuk essentiëler is geworden volgers kenners. ‘Played in its original order for the first time, features around 80 minutes of previously unreleased material. This deluxe edition is mastered and sourced from the original tapes for maximum fidelity and includes previously unseen photos from original photographer Gosta Peterson, as well as new liner notes from jazz historian and producer, Michael Cuscuna. Originally recorded in January 19, 1974, Mingus At Carnegie Hall was released as a 1 LP that only featured 2 long tracks. Yet the original concert in January of 74’ included. The Goon Sax – mirror II
Mooie nieuwe plaat van The Goon Sax, uit Australië en met de zoon van Robert Forster van The Go-Betweens. En veel van die band is terug te horen in The Goon Sax. Vooral de Schotse jaren ’80 indie invloeden. Zo doet Goon Sax bij vlagen behoorlijk denken aan bijvoorbeeld The Pastels. En andere Schotse bands uit die tijd. Wat niet zo raar is want ook The Go-Betweens brachten destijds werk uit op het legendarische Schotse Postcard label. Mirror II is subtiel volwassener dan de voorganger, zonder de charmes van die plaat te verliezen. Het blijft lekker schuchter en onzeker. Mooie plaat, geproduceerd door John Parish. Matt Sweeney & Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy – superwolves
Mooie heropgepakte samenwerking tussen Matt Sweeney en Bonnie Prince Billy. 15 jaar na Superwolf de opvolger, getiteld Superwolves dus. Ze deden er ruim 5 jaar over en in die periode maakte Oldham aardig wat mee en dat maakt dat veel liedjes op Superwolves flink binnenkomen qua rauwe emotie. ‘Where once was Superwolf, now are Superwolves. What world, REALLY are Matt Sweeney and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy from? A place of all-music, knowing no borders, no morals other than natural tribal lines to be violated in the name of love and light, for all together.’ Een 8.0 op Pitchfork. The Go! Team – get up sequences part one
Een plaat van The Go! Team, uit Brighton, is altijd een feest. Letterlijk. Spetterende en uitbundige explosie van alles wat glittert en glimmert en spettert. Kauwgomballen, confetti, cheerleaders. Ian Barton, een soort hedendaagse Britse feestelijke, speelse versie van Phil Spector heeft met zijn zangeressen en overdosis musici weer een heerlijk over de top lp gemaakt, alhoewel net iets ingetogener wellicht dan eerdere platen. ‘A place where routine is outlawed and perfection is the enemy. Where Ennio Morricone meets the Monkees armed with flutes, glockenspiels, steel drums and a badass analogue attitude. Trees Speak – shadow forms
Het Britse Soul Jazz brengt niet zo heel veel hedendaags werk uit maar bij Trees Speak gingen ze voor de bijl. Ohms kwam een paar jaar geleden uit maar nu gelukkig een reissue, op gekleurd vinyl en zeer gelimiteerd. Prachtige krautpsychdrone, uit Tucson, Arizona. ‘This is a super-limited strictly 1000 copy one-off only edition pressed on white coloured vinyl of this in-demand Trees Speak album. When the band Trees Speak, coming out of nowhere, released an exclusive one-off 100-pressing white label 45, it sold out so quickly (in less than 30 min) that Soul Jazz Records decided to release their album almost immediately. The group Trees Speak are from Tucson, Arizona and create new music that sounds like GERMAN KRAUTROCK meets NO WAVE/POST-PUNK and PSYCH ROCK. The album ‘OHMS’ sounds at times like a tripped out & moody JOHN CARPENTER/GOBLIN/MORRICONE soundtrack that seamlessly segues into propulsive, ‘motorik’ Krautrock instrumentals loaded with fuzzy, hypnotic mellotron, synths and analogue effects’. Son House – complete library of congress sessions + bonus tracks 1941 - 1942
Mooie release op Jasmine met heel old school blues maar wel klassiek materiaal van de legendarische Son House, opgenomen door en voor Alan Lomax. ‘The material has been out of circulation for some time now and is long overdue for another reissue in the CD format. Many have said that these performances for Alan Lomax are amongst his finest, displaying as they do, how brilliantly original and creative an artist he was.’ Hier een nummer. cd €12,90

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – teenage gizzard
Werk uit de prille beginperiode van deze Aussies, nog voor de eerste lp. ‘A collection of early non-album singles and rarities that date back to 2010 and 2011, even before their debut album.’ Een plaat die iedereen uit mocht brengen en dat deden velen (49 versies tot nu toe volgens Discogs).
