AMERICA IS AT A CROSSROADS.

Six months have passed since the failed attack on our nation and our democracy on January 6th. Since that day, anti-voter laws have been passed in states all over the country and the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent rulings have made clear that it will not act to protect the sacred right to vote. This summer, Congressional districts risk being redrawn in a way that will allow politicians to choose their voters – rather than the voters fairly choosing who represents them.

We have reached an inflection point in which we must force our elected officials to act now or risk losing the very foundation of our republic.

But there is hope for us to stop this undercurrent of corruption and rebuild American democracy so that the freedom to vote is protected, billionaires don’t control our political systems, and our representatives actually respond to we the people.

To do this, we must pass the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and D.C. Statehood – and we can’t let anything, including the Jim Crow filibuster, stand in our way!

AT STAKE

The late Congressman John Lewis risked his life crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge to fight for Black voters and other voters of color to participate in America’s electoral process and the enactment of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Today, voting rights are under attack across the country by state legislators introducing and passing laws to put up barriers to our participation in elections, especially aimed at Black, Brown and Indigenous voters. Luckily, there are solutions that the federal government can take in order to protect voting rights nationwide and ensure a democracy that works for all Americans.

This Summer, we are calling on Congress to pass the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and DC Statehood. As we honor John Lewis one year after his passing, we must recommit to protecting his legacy of protecting the right to vote.

The For the People Act is a once-in-a-generation package of sweeping democracy reforms. The For the People Act would ensure our freedom to vote, get big money out of politics, end partisan gerrymandering to ensure fairly drawn districts, restore government ethics to hold our elected officials accountable, and more. It would also undo many of the racist anti-voter laws that have been passed around the country.

The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would strengthen the freedom to vote for Americans across race and region by making sure that attempts to create barriers to voting that discriminate against voters based on our color or background get federal review, so we all have an equal say in our future.

DC Statehood (S51) is a civil rights issue. The over 700,000 residents of DC, 43% of whom are Black, have no representation in Congress. Residents are taxed without representation, and the district is limited in even creating its own local laws.

JOIN IN THE GOOD TROUBLE VIGILS FOR DEMOCRACY ON JULY 17 — THE ONE YEAR MARK OF THE PASSING OF REP. JOHN LEWIS — AS WE CARRY ON HIS LEGACY WITH CANDLELIGHT VIGILS NATIONWIDE TO DEMAND THAT CONGRESS ACT TO PROTECT OUR FREEDOM TO VOTE AND REBUILD OUR DEMOCRACY. WE MUST AND WILL WIN THIS FIGHT!

REDISTRICTING

Every 10 years, redistricting is done for most of the different political jurisdictions in America. Why should you care? Redistricting affects us at our local, state, and federal levels - County Board of Supervisors, State Assembly, State Senate, and Federal Congressional District boundary lines may be shifted and Mariposa County may find itself in a different Congressional District - perhaps Devin Nunes' instead of Tom McClintock's?

MARIPOSA COUNTY

The first of five redistricting public hearings for Mariposa County took place on June 8th. in the Board of Supervisors chambers. Following, the next hearings will be held on:
  • Saturday, Jul 17 at 10am
  • Tuesday, Sep 14 at 2pm
  • Monday, Nov 1 at 6pm
  • Tuesday, Nov 2 at 2pm

The deadline for redistricting completion is Dec 15th, with the ordinance to be introduced on Nov 23rd at 2pm and the adoption of the ordinance approving the new redistricting maps on Dec 7th at 2pm

The first state-wide public hearing was held on June 10th. In November 2008, California voters passed the Voters FIRST Act, authorizing the creation of the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission to draw new district lines, taking the job out of the hands of the California Legislature and transferring it to the citizens. In 2010, the VOTERS FIRST Act for Congress added the responsibility of drawing Congressional districts to the Commission.

RECALL ELECTION
SEPTEMBER 14, 2021

Information on the Recall

Gubernatorial Recall Ballot
  • What does a recall ballot look like?
    • Recall ballots have two parts.
      • In the first part, voters would have the option to vote “yes” or “no” to the question of whether to remove the Governor from office.
      • In the second part, the voter would have an opportunity to select a replacement candidate, and those votes for a successor candidate would only be counted if more than 50% of voters casting ballots in the recall election vote to recall the Governor.
  • Will a replacement candidate's political party preference and occupation be noted on a recall ballot?
    • Yes. A replacement candidate's political party preference will be included on the ballot along with their occupation, if a ballot designation worksheet has been filed with their county elections official and the candidate's ballot designation has been approved by the Secretary of State.
  • Who can vote in a gubernatorial recall election?
    • Any California registered voter may vote in a gubernatorial recall election.
  • Will every active registered voter be mailed a vote-by-mail ballot?
    • Yes. Every active registered voter will be mailed a vote-by-mail ballot for the recall election. Counties will begin to mail vote-by-mail ballots approximately 29 days before Election Day.
  • Recall ballots have two parts. Must voters vote on both parts of the recall ballot?
    • No. Voters can vote on either one or both parts of the recall ballot. A voter can vote “no” to the question of removing the current elected officer from office and also select a replacement candidate.
  • What happens after the recall election?
    • If a majority of the voters vote “yes” on the first question, then the recall is successful. The replacement candidate who gets the most votes is elected for the unexpired term of office.
    • If a majority of the voters vote “no” on the first question, then the recall has failed and the officer will remain in office.
