July & August

As your schedule allows, the summer is a great time to complete some
key action steps in the college process, listed below for grades 9-12.

Seniors

Continue to diligently check your personal and college specific emails and keep up with communication from the university you have decided to attend. Most colleges will communicate directly with students, not parents, and will disclose key information throughout the summer about enrollment, medical forms, housing, and more. Is there any required summer reading or prework? If so, make sure you begin to tackle these items and do not leave them for the last minute. As you begin to prepare for your first year of college, make sure you take the time to make a plan and set yourself up for success. Click HERE for more information on how to maximize year one of college. If you are starting to think about what to pack or what might help you get organized, click HERE for a school-specific packing check list tool. Following an academically challenging four years, make sure you spend time outside, relax, and enjoy family and friends this summer!

Juniors

By August, the main portion of your Common Application should be close to complete. If not, continue filling out the profile, family, education, activities, and testing sections. At this point in time, it would also be helpful to have your main essay underway. Finishing these items will allow you to focus on any additional school specific questions in the fall.  The summer is a great time to continue researching the schools on your list and get to know them in more meaningful ways. Click HERE for a tool that may help you add schools to your list looking at a number of different criteria that may be important to you. Start thinking about ways you can demonstrate interest in a school or university. These include, but are not limited to completing an online information request form, emailing your admissions counselor with thoughtful questions and comments, following the school on social media, attending admission events, visiting the campus, and applying early.
If time and your summer travel allow, click HERE for more information on how to make the most of a college visit this summer. If applicable, spend some time studying this summer and prepare to retake the SAT or ACT this fall.  As a reminder, social media can be both helpful and harmful in the application process and it is important to know how to use the platform to your benefit, while preventing any adverse consequences. Click HERE for more information.  Make sure you are completing your summer reading and relax, go outside, and spend time with your family and friends!

Sophomores

As the mid-point of the summer nears, it is essential to ensure you are making progress with your summer reading. Do not leave this until the end of the summer! Continue to refine your list of colleges and conduct preliminary research on schools you might be interested in attending. If time and travel allow, the summer is a great time to visit a few colleges and universities or look into conducting some virtual tours. If visiting any schools, click HERE for more information on how to make the most of your visit.
