President's Message
“At Hadassah, we're about much more than our hospitals.”  That's the parting message from our former CEO, Janice Weinman. “Besides the hospitals, which are exemplary in the research they do and humanitarian outreach they provide, we support villages that serve at-risk youth in Israel. These are young people who have a lot of needs. They need skills —academic, psychological. They come and they leave totally transformed.” Meir Shfeyah and Hadassah Neurim are Youth Aliyah villages you don’t want to miss when you visit Israel.

Originally a response to the Holocaust in the early 1930s, Youth Aliyah saw its mandate as rescue and education. At age 15, our own Seattle member Ruth Fast, who is now 100 years old, was one of thousands Youth Aliyah rescued and brought to then-Palestine, where she was met on the shore by Hadassah founder Henrietta Szold.  Coincidentally, Beloria Levy, a Child Life Member, was 15 when she baked, donated, and delivered a birthday cake in Ruth’s honor for her 99th birthday in August 2019.  Watch the party here.

Understandably, Ruth is so appreciative to Hadassah’s Youth Aliyah -- she chose that project when she signed up for Annual Giving (click here for brochure).  Annual Givers provide a significant, reliable source of funds to support the ongoing costs of Hadassah’s projects that also include Young Judea scholarships, medical research, and whatever is considered the greatest need at the time.  Does one project call out to you?  While Seattle’s recent Gala raised funds to make a one-time purchase of a Nurses’ Station, Annual Giving is an ongoing yearly commitment to give to your designated project.  Please join me in signing up for the virtual Annual Giving event on Sunday, August 15, sponsored by Hadassah Southern California and Pacific Northwest Region.  This is a thank you program for those who already are Annual Givers (77 in Seattle Chapter) and an opportunity for the rest of us to get started by joining with a minimum $180 commitment.   Click here to register.

Thanking you in advance,  Ettie Davis

P.S.  Questions?  Best person to ask is Ian Merles, Annual Giving Officer, West Coast Hadassah.  Email at imerles@hadassah.org to get answers.

“Summertime an’ the Cookin’ Is Easy”

 Jamie Feit MS, RD

“We had a delightful guest speaker named Jamie Feit. She has written cookbooks and is amazing! She gave us 3 recipes (Mexican Salmon Burgers, Hawaiian Tofu Kabobs, and Sweet Potato and Bean Salad) that sounded amazing!  I'm not a cook, but these recipes have me excited to try them!”—Marci Nemhauser

“Jamie is an enthusiastic chef. She had great explanations, She was responsive to questions in the chat-and supplied substitutions to make these recipes receptive to all.  I felt so comfortable in “her” kitchen and she was an excellent instructor.  Thank you for this program.”—Participant

“Jamie was great, and her recipes were simple, but creative! I love that she focuses on making healthy (whether gluten free, low sodium, reduced sugar, or whatever) meals that everyone in the family can enjoy--no need to make different dishes for everyone.”—Sue Solomon

“I loved it!!  Jamie was fantastic!  Great recipes especially for this week of the 9 days. Easy to follow and delicious. Thank you so much!” —  Miriam Levy
