Women Owning Woodlands VT is an initiative of Vermont Coverts, Vermont Land Trust, Vermont Woodlands Association, UVM Extension, Vermont Department of Forests Parks and Recreation and Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife

With summer in full swing we hope you’ve been finding ways to stay cool. In case you missed the invasive plant webinars we hosted this spring, here are the links to the presentations--WOW Invasives Part I and WOW Invasives Part II.

Many of you have likely experienced some sort of Lymantria dispar dispar (LDD), also known as gypsy moth, impact to your trees. The last outbreak was in 1991. A fungus called Entomophaga maimaiga has normally been able to keep the LDD population in check. However, the dry weather that we’ve experienced in the last couple of years has led to a significant decrease in the population of the fungus thus allowing the number of LDD moths to increase. While LDD prefer oak, maple, cherry and birch trees, the caterpillars may feed on over 300 species of trees when there are a lot of them. Read more here or tune into an upcoming webinar hosted by VT Coverts:

LDD (Gypsy Moth) and You
Tuesday, July 20
7:00-8:00pm
State Entomologist Judy Rosovsky and Forest Protection Program Manager Kathy Decker will share about the life cycle of the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar dispar), the damage done this year, what to expect next year, and what you as a landowner can do. Register in advance for this meeting

Finally, for those of you in southern Vermont, here is an upcoming woods walk we think you’ll enjoy. We’ll be in touch with our fall line-up soon. In the meantime, may the forest be with you.

Women on the Land: A Landowners Guide to Stewarding Her Woodlands
(In-person)
Saturday, July 24th
9:00am - 12:00pm

Experience a guided hike at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller NHP, led by Olivia Lukacic, author of the Women on The Land publication. Olivia will be joined by several female foresters from the Northeast region.  We will learn about their experiences as foresters in a typically male-dominated field and their unique perspectives on forest management. Using the Mount Tom Forest (one of the oldest professionally managed forests in the United States) as a classroom, we will also hear about the history of several forest stands and the intricacies involved with managing a historic forest.  This Working Woodlands Workshop is co-hosted by Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller NHP and the Billings Farm and Museum and co-sponsored by Vermont Coverts and Vermont Woodlands Association. The hike will be approximately 3 miles with elevation gain. Please plan on dressing appropriately and bringing water and snacks if needed. Face masks are required for individuals who are not yet fully vaccinated.

Register by emailing joseph_sullivan@partner.nps.gov with the number of individuals in your party and any questions you may have. Space is limited to 25 participants.
