Join the Artists of Fleece whilst we celebrate our official opening of the Masham Flock shop.
Saturday 31st July 11am.
We are delighted to welcome 3 new artists to Fleece.

“I have been making sculptures for a few years and was so excited to join Fleece. Over the last few weeks, I have been busy making new stock and am love spending time being creative. Sometimes I sit down with something particular in mind and then through the window I spot a passing fox, hare or group of partridges and this provides me with my inspiration for the day.

Each sculpture is unique and is handmade with love.  They are fired and then have 3 coats of glaze applied before firing again. Each firing takes between 24 to 30 hours which is very frustrating as I can’t wait to open the kiln and see how they have turned out!   My favourite animals to sculpt are sheep. I like to give each one its own character and personality, and then I make the lambs to match the mother, so they feel like they belong together. The best thing about making sculptures whilst living on a farm, is if you’re not quite sure how something should look, you can just pop out and have a look at a real one!”

I have been making ceramics for about 7 years alongside my business as a furniture designer and maker, based in Thirsk.   I am about to retire from that business and am currently building a garden studio so that I can continue making ceramics from home.

I started my working life as an architect, and think that both my furniture and now my pots have been considerably influenced by that training. I try to make elegant and refined forms, and although most of my pieces have a practical use, I tend to regard them as artworks, rather than utilitarian pots.  Most of my pieces are thrown pots with simple glazes, though occasionally I make hand built pots.  I have done a lot of life drawing over the years, and am now using that history to make small male and female torso sculptures.

I have taken part in North Yorkshire Open Studios as a furniture maker most years since it started. 2021 was to be my first year as a ceramicist, so I am taking part in the NYOS Sunny Bank Mills exhibition in August and September 2021.

Lyn Matheson

Lyn is lucky enough to have lived in Wensleydale for the past 16 years – a beautiful and abundant source of inspiration for her linocut art work.  Wildlife that inhabits her garden and surroundings; drystone walls undulating their way across the rich green landscape, patterned by sheep and barns; plentiful rivers; secret waterfalls and unspoilt villages.  Every walk reveals something magical - curlews circling over the fields; a family of hares glimpsed in long grass on summer evenings; the white flash of a resident barn owl; lanes laced with cow parsley and hawthorn trees shaped by the prevailing winds.

Surrounded by all this glorious inspiration, Lyn works at her kitchen table from where she can see her bird filled cottage garden and the fields beyond.  Her ideas are first drawn in her sketchbook, and reworked until she is happy with them.  A variety of linocut tools are used to carve out the design, before using inks to colour the block and then carefully hand burnishing the picture onto to archival paper. When the paper is finally peeled away from the lino block the result is always a surprise, and no two ‘prints’ are ever the same!
