NEWS FROM THE TEAM
COMING ASHORE MENTOR HELPS TO LAUNCH NEW LEARN@SEA COURSE

The Marine Society proudly launched three Learn@Sea courses on 6 July on board the HQS Wellington in London in front of a Covid-limited full house comprising beneficiaries, partners and funders.

Stability@Sea, Navigation@Sea and Navigation@Sea Plus have now been added to the education suite to make up 15 courses to date. These technical courses cover modules suitable for cadets, students and mariners, adding more niche content to our maritime contextualised functional courses such as English@Sea, Maths@Sea and Writing@Sea.

The event was a resounding success allowing members of the maritime community to not only see the new courses in all their glory but to do so face-to-face, putting an end to 18 months of permanent virtual meets.

The Marine Society's very own Jamie Bullar alongside Coming Ashore mentor and Whitehorse Maritime founder Paul Naranjo-Shephard assisted our Director of Maritime Training & Development, Darrell Bate, in cutting the ribbon to make it official.

Paul - who has been helping many mentees with their own personal journeys ashore - was commissioned to write both our Navigation@Sea and Navigation@Sea Plus courses. We're delighted with the outcome!

Fellow Coming Ashore mentor Steve Cameron also attended the event.

Please go to our Learn@Sea page to find out more about our courses and to sign up to the education suite.

COMING ASHORE EVENT AT LONDON INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING WEEK
As part of London International Shipping Week, the Marine Society will be taking part in Sea to City Networking Scheme, providing an opportunity to showcase the Coming Ashore programme in the form of a panel discussion. Experts from the maritime industry will be sharing their experiences and asking any questions to seafarers looking to make the same transition to a maritime job ashore.

The event is being coined as 'hybrid' due to a combination of face-to-face and virtual elements. The event will include a select, invite-only physical audience coupled with a live video stream to the Hopin platform.

Online Attendees will have the opportunity to ask Speakers questions via the Q&A function, interact with other Attendees via Chat and Direct Messaging, engage in 1-2-1 Networking as well as visit Expo booths.
"I came ashore without Plan B and it was really testing times for me.
I instantly joined the programme and was in touch with Fena Boyle, who really helped me with brushing up on my CV and what recruiters expect my CV to look like and not to forget the other wealth of advise she imparted.

After constantly applying for different maritime role and with lot of disappointments, finally got an opportunity for a interview and was offered employment for a shore based role in a ship management company. It's been a huge challenge in adjusting to the new office role.
My aspirations here on are to keep moving forward and take it step by step and learn from diverse maritime shore based industry.
"

SPOTLIGHT PERSONALITY PROFILING TOOL
A tool that has been used and approved by British Cycling, The FA, Sheffield Hallam University and Algeco, Spotlight have managed to find a formula that profiles both 'behavioural style' and 'mindset'. Which in this case gives Coming Ashore mentees clarity when deciding on the next phase of their career.

The personality tool was originally created to analyse the changes in elite athletes behaviour depending on whether they are winning or losing. In short, some thrive to win and others focus on trying not to lose.

This analysis can be applied when looking at job-specific personality traits and interview styles. The report is broken down into strengths, risks, frustrations and challenges across five domains. These range from making decisions and setting goals to managing your work and commitments.

Coming Ashore mentees get FREE access to this tool, with additional analysis from a maritime professional available with an added fee.

Find out which strategy you innately employ.
