Stories on the Farm

Join us for a live performance set throughout the farm.

Thursday, July 22

Arrive anytime between 5 and 6:15, show ends at 7 PM

Time travel to 1850 to explore this historic farm on the strings of Appalachian fiddle music from the renowned local musical historian Bruce Greene, and musicians Nick Rash and Dylan Wilson. Hear original tales based on western North Carolina characters, written by actors of
Mountain Heritage High School’s Theatre Arts Program.

Student actors will be joined by the 1857 Yancey men, Big Tom Wilson and Adaniram Allen telling their original, gripping account of the search for Elisha Mitchell, lost in the dense forests of the mountain now bearing his name.

If you can't make it this time mark your calendar for Thursday, August 26,
when we'll do it again.

This evening is free and open to the public — so please, bring a friend.

We are delighted to announce a NEW family initiative for our community

Beginning Saturday, September 25th, and throughout all Saturdays in October, we invite you and your family to return to the Center to pick pumpkins from the field, wind your way through a corn maze, and visit the Pumpkin Palace. You’ll be delighted by all things spooky and surprising!

In the evenings, catch a wagon ride with Dylan, and the last working draft-horse team in Yancey County — Chubby and Claude, Roll past creeks and hollows while listening to “scary” stories about historical mountain characters.

Sound like fun? We need volunteers to staff everything from parking to host duties. So, call us to join the Scary Saturday Support Team.

Watch this space for more details coming soon.

Join our waitlist for another broom-making class

Because we had to reschedule our broom-making class, there may be a few more spaces coming this fall. Write to hello@pioneerlife.org to place you name on the waitlist. In this class you'll learn to make functional and sculptural brooms from traditional materials with accomplished furniture artist Aspen Golann. This workshop is offered in partnership with Penland School of Craft.
