The Board of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology has just appointed the professors who will reinforce the competences of the EPFL in the coming months. We are pleased to present below the movements within the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering and wish the best to the professors who are leaving on retirement.

Meret Aeppli (PATT)

Dr Meret Aeppli, currently Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University, USA, was appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering.
Meret Aeppli investigates redox reactivity and the role of soil in the global carbon cycle. The aim of her research is to find sustainable ways of protecting soil carbon and reducing the negative effects of climate change. At EPFL she will set up a research programme to explore the carbon cycle in watershed areas, with particular emphasis on the study of carbon stabilisation in soils at contrasting locations commonly found in Switzerland, such as high altitudes and floodplains.

Professor Beate Jessel, formerly President of the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, Bonn, Germany, was appointed as Full Professor of Landscape Development in the Department of Environmental Systems Science at ETHZ and at ENAC at EPFL.
Beate Jessel took up her post as Director of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) at the start of September 2021. Beate Jessel’s research interests encompass concepts and strategies for nature conservation, landscape development and land use management, environmentally oriented planning, river basin management and landscape aesthetics.

Olga Fink (PATT)

Professor Olga Fink, currently Assistant Professor at ETH Zurich and Research Affiliate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, was appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering.
Olga Fink’s research focuses on the development of intelligent algorithms in complex infrastructures and industrial systems. She is a recognised expert in the fields of deep learning and hybrid algorithms for intelligent maintenance systems. Olga Fink is a member of numerous committees, serves as an expert for Innosuisse, and participates in various working groups at ETH Zurich. Her expertise and research interests will significantly strengthen civil engineering at EPFL in the area of infrastructure systems maintenance.

Charlotte Malterre-Barthes (PATT)

Professor Charlotte Malterre-Barthes, currently Assistant Professor at Harvard University, USA, was appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Architecture.
Charlotte Malterre-Barthes works on territorial transformations and urbanization processes and conducts research into resources, ecology, the economy, logistics and governance. She also investigates interrelated topics such as informal housing construction, agriculture, poverty, migration, climate and buildings, with the help of digital mapping technologies, satellite images and field studies. Charlotte Malterre-Barthes spent six years as course director of the Master’s degree in Urban Design at ETH Zurich, and is a co-founder of the Parity Group for gender equality in architecture. She is also a member of several committees and co-director of her own architecture practice.

Sarah Nichols (PATT)

Professor Sarah Nichols, currently Assistant Professor at Rice University, USA, was appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Architecture.
Sarah Nichols carries out research into the history of construction materials, how they are produced, and construction practice in Switzerland in the context of political and ecological concerns. Her current focus is on the role of concrete, an area in which she is making an important contribution to the debate about the circular economy and the demand for sustainable construction materials. With the appointment of this up-and-coming architectural historian and theoretician, the institute is strengthening its teaching and scientific influence in a research area of great social importance.

Stefana Parascho (PATT)

Professor Stefana Parascho, currently Assistant Professor at Princeton University, USA, was appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Architecture.
Stefana Parascho is a researcher, architect and lecturer who works at the interface between architecture and digitalisation; her main interests are computational design and integrative models of architecture, and she has won multiple awards for her research. Her aim is to promote an interdisciplinary approach to architecture through the development of digital production methods and robot-assisted manufacturing processes. Stefana Parascho has all the academic and personal qualities of a first-class researcher and lecturer; she will be an asset to EPFL in this socially relevant field.

Dr Andrew Sonta, currently Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Columbia, USA, was appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering.
Andrew Sonta’s research focuses on data-driven modelling, analysis and design techniques for the enhancement of social and environmental objectives in the built environment. He aims to address urban sustainability challenges through a multidisciplinary lens. Andrew Sonta also studies the physical connections between energy consumption and the efficient operation of buildings. In addition to developing a new research programme, he will contribute to new clusters involving the School, the Smart Living Lab in Fribourg and the recently founded Center for Climate Impact and Action (CLIMACT).

Professor Brice Lecampion, currently Tenure Track Assistant Professor at EPFL, was promoted as Associate Professor.
Brice Lecampion's work focuses on fundamental and applied research topics connected with subsurface geo-energy projects (deep geothermics, CO2 storage, gas extraction and storage) with the aim of improving practice within the industry and making expert knowledge available to political decision-makers, regulatory authorities and the general public. With his solid industrial experience and his experimental work, he makes a substantial contribution to his specialist area, in which he is regarded as one of the world’s leading researchers.

Anastasios Vassilopoulos (PTIT)

Dr Anastasios Vassilopoulos, currently Senior Scientist, was promoted as Adjunct Professor at EPFL.
Anastasios Vassilopoulos investigates advanced materials for sustainable structures. At the School he has successfully developed a research area which looks at fatigue damage in building components made of composite materials. His work is making a key contribution to a new generation of advanced materials and he is regarded as the leading researcher in his field.

Luca Ortelli (PO)

Professor Luca Ortelli retired after 25 years of teaching and research at EPFL.
As Director of the Section and Institute of Architecture, Luca Ortelli has deeply marked the disciplinary profile of architecture in an intellectual dimension. With commitment, rigor and dialectic passion, he has worked to integrate the critical culture of the project into the polytechnic domain and within the ENAC Faculty by encouraging research and teaching in an ethically responsible and socially sustainable perspective. Luca Ortelli will continue teaching at the architecture section until the end of the year. We warmly thank Professor Ortelli for his exceptional commitment to our School.

Alfred Johny Wüest (PO)

Professor Alfred Johny Wüest, at EPFL since 2012, left on retirement.
Alfred Johny Wüest has been a true leader in the observation, prediction and engineering of inland water systems. Through his activities at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (eawag) since 2015, he has also greatly contributed to forging close links between EPFL and eawag. We warmly thank Professor Wüest for his commitment to our School, his internationally recognized scientific production, his contribution to the training of engineers in water resources management, and his influence on students on scientific approaches to limnology.

Meret Aeppli, actuellement postdoctorante à l’Université de Stanford, Etats-Unis, est nommée professeure assistante tenure track de sciences et ingénierie de l’environnement.
Meret Aeppli s’intéresse aux réactions redox et au rôle des sols dans le cycle global du carbone. Elle s’emploie à développer des mesures durables pour protéger le carbone dans le sol et atténuer les effets négatifs du changement climatique. A l’EPFL, Meret Aeppli mettra en place un programme de recherche visant à améliorer la compréhension du cycle du carbone dans les bassins versants, notamment en analysant la stabilisation du carbone dans le sol sur des sites contrastés, p. ex. en haute altitude et dans les zones inondables, deux types de sites que l’on rencontre fréquemment en Suisse.

La professeure Beate Jessel, anciennement présidente du Bundesamt für Naturschutz (Office fédéral de protection de la nature) à Bonn, Allemagne, est nommée professeure ordinaire d’aménagement du paysage au Département des sciences des systèmes de l’environnement de l’ETHZ ainsi qu’à l'ENAC à l'EPFL.
Beate Jessel a pris ses nouvelles fonctions de directrice de l’Institut fédéral de recherches sur la forêt, la neige et le paysage (WSL) début septembre 2021. Les priorités de recherche de Beate Jessel portent notamment sur les concepts et les stratégies de protection de la nature, l’aménagement du paysage et la gestion de l’utilisation du territoire, la planification à orientation écologique, la gestion des bassins versants et l’esthétique du paysage.

Olga Fink (PATT)

La professeure Olga Fink, actuellement professeure assistante à l’ETH Zurich et chercheuse affiliée au Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Etats-Unis, est nommée professeure assistante tenure track de génie civil.
Olga Fink étudie le développement d’algorithmes intelligents dans les infrastructures complexes et les systèmes industriels. Spécialiste de l’apprentissage profond (deep learning) et des algorithmes hybrides appliqués aux systèmes de maintenance intelligents, elle est membre de nombreux comités, experte auprès d’Innosuisse et participe à différents groupes de travail au sein de l’ETH Zurich. De par son expertise et ses axes de recherche, elle sera en mesure de renforcer considérablement l’ingénierie civile à l’EPFL, et plus particulièrement le secteur de l’entretien des systèmes d’infrastructures.

La professeure Charlotte Malterre-Barthes, actuellement professeure assistante à Harvard, Etats-Unis, est nommée professeure assistante tenure track d’architecture.
Charlotte Malterre-Barthes se consacre à l’étude des transformations territoriales et des processus d’urbanisation, axant ses travaux sur les ressources, l’écologie, l’économie, la logistique et la gouvernance. Elle se penche sur des thèmes interdépendants tels que le logement informel, l’agriculture, la pauvreté, la migration, le climat et l’immobilier, en utilisant les technologies de cartographie numériques, l’imagerie satellite ainsi que des enquêtes de terrain. A la tête du master en design urbain de l’ETH Zurich pendant six ans, Charlotte Malterre-Barthes a également co-fondé le Parity Group, une association dédiée à l’égalité des genres en architecture. Elle est par ailleurs membre de plusieurs comités et co-dirige son propre bureau d’architecte.

La professeure Sarah Nichols, actuellement professeure assistante à l’Université de Rice, Etats-Unis, est nommée professeure assistante tenure track d’architecture.
Sarah Nichols s’est spécialisée dans l’histoire des matériaux de construction, l’extraction des matériaux et la pratique de la construction en Suisse dans le contexte des préoccupations politiques et écologiques. Elle travaille actuellement sur le rôle du béton et alimente ainsi de manière déterminante le débat sur l’économie circulaire et les matériaux de construction durables. La nomination de cette historienne et théoricienne de l’architecture très prometteuse permettra à l’Institut d’architecture et de la ville de renforcer ses activités d’enseignement et d’augmenter son impact scientifique dans un thème de recherche d’une importance notable pour la société.

La professeure Stefana Parascho, actuellement professeure assistante à l’Université de Princeton, Etats-Unis, est nommée professeure assistante tenure track d’architecture.
Les travaux de Stefana Parascho en tant que chercheuse, architecte et enseignante se situent à l’intersection de l’architecture et de la fabrication numérique et portent plus particulièrement sur les processus de fabrication multi-robotique et leur intégration dans la conception architecturale. L’objectif de cette chercheuse maintes fois récompensée est de stimuler la nature interdisciplinaire de l’architecture par le développement d’outils numériques et de méthodes de fabrication robotique. Stefana Parascho possède toutes les qualités scientifiques et personnelles d’une chercheuse et d’une enseignante de premier plan. En s’adjoignant ses services, l’EPFL se donne les moyens de renforcer ses activités autour d’une thématique de recherche d’une grande portée pour la société.

Andrew Sonta (PATT)

Andrew Sonta, actuellement postdoctorant à l’Université Columbia, Etats-Unis, est nommé professeur assistant tenure track de génie civil.
Andrew Sonta axe ses recherches sur les techniques de modélisation, d’analyse et de conception basées sur les données en vue d’améliorer les objectifs sociaux et écologiques dans l’environnement construit. Il entend miser sur la multidisciplinarité pour aborder les enjeux de la durabilité urbaine. Par ailleurs, il s’intéresse aux phénomènes physiques qui interviennent entre la consommation d'énergie et l'efficacité du fonctionnement des bâtiments. Andrew Sonta développera aussi un programme de recherche et contribuera aux nouveaux clusters de l’ENAC, au Smart Living Lab à Fribourg et au nouveau centre CLIMACT.

Le professeur Brice Lecampion, actuellement professeur assistant tenure track à l’EPFL, est nommé professeur associé.
Brice Lecampion aborde des questions de recherche fondamentale et de recherche appliquée liées aux projets de géo-énergie de subsurface (énergie géothermique profonde, stockage de CO2, production et stockage de gaz). Il entend non seulement améliorer les pratiques industrielles mais également mettre son expertise au service des décideurs politiques, des autorités chargées de la réglementation et du grand public. Conjuguant une solide expérience de l’industrie à des travaux d’ordre expérimental, Brice Lecampion contribue de manière essentielle à son champ de recherche et est considéré dans le monde entier comme un chercheur de pointe.

Anastasios Vassilopoulos, actuellement maître d’enseignement et de recherche est nommé professeur titulaire.
Anastasios Vassilopoulos étudie les matériaux avancés pour la conception de structures durables et a développé avec succès les recherches portant sur la fatigue des matériaux composites au sein de la Faculté. Il fournit une contribution essentielle à l’élaboration d’une nouvelle génération de matériaux innovants et figure parmi les leaders mondiaux de sa discipline.

Le professeur Luca Ortelli, après 25 ans d'enseignement et de recherche à l'EPFL, a pris sa retraite.
En tant que directeur de la Section et de l'Institut d'Architecture, Luca Ortelli a profondément ancré le profil disciplinaire de l’architecture dans une dimension intellectuelle. Avec engagement, rigueur et passion dialectique, il s’est employé à intégrer dans le domaine polytechnique et au sein de la Faculté ENAC la culture critique du projet en encourageant la recherche et la didactique dans une perspective éthiquement responsable et socialement soutenable. Le professeur Ortelli continuera d'enseigner dans la section d'architecture jusqu'à la fin de l'année. Nous remercions chaleureusement le professeur Ortelli de son engagement exceptionnel pour notre Ecole.

Alfred Johny Wüest (PO)

Le professeur Alfred Johny Wüest, à l’EPFL depuis 2012, a pris sa retraite.
Alfred Johny Wüest a été un véritable leader dans l'observation, la prévision et l'ingénierie des systèmes aquatiques intérieurs. Grace à ses activités à l’Institut fédéral suisse des sciences et technologies de l’eau (eawag) depuis 2015, il a également grandement contribué à tisser des liens étroits entre l’EPFL et l’eawag. Nous remercions chaleureusement le professeur Wüest pour son engagement en faveur de notre École, sa production scientifique internationalement reconnue, sa contribution à la formation des ingénieurs en gestion des ressources aquatiques, et son influence auprès des étudiants sur les approches scientifiques de la limnologie.
