Welcome Message
Even with everything going on this summer, the summer feels as though it was over in a flash!  I hope all of you had a chance to enjoy some time off and are enjoying the transition back to school and work.  While things have been a bit quieter this year on the 4-H front, we have had a couple of online events, like Kahoot 4-H Trivia, a regional and a provincial online judging competition, and Go For The Gold.  Thank you to all the leaders that helped organize these events and thank you to the 4-H members who participated; you helped make the events a success and you helped promote the spirit of 4-H.  Well done!

On November 3rd 4-H is hoping that everyone in Chatham-Kent will further promote our organization by wearing 4-H green during the ‘Show Your Colours’ day.  In addition to showing off our colours, Chatham-Kent 4-H will be raising the 4-H flag in front of city hall in Chatham on November 3rd!  Feel free to drive by and honk to show your support!

For those of you who are just wrapping up your Chatham-Kent Club for the 2021 year and are wondering what exciting 4-H opportunity you can work on until year-end in December, check out the Provincial online clubs.  There are a number of new virtual clubs starting soon, and by joining an online club you’ll meet 4-H members from across Ontario.  If you don’t feel like joining a club, you can always try one of the weekly 4-H DIY activities posted instead.  There are options out there for everyone.  One last event to keep in mind is Chatham-Kent’s year-end recognition event.  We are working to organize it and details should be posted in the next little while, so watch out for upcoming announcements.

Take care Chatham-Kent and happy harvests!

Kris McNaughton
Chatham-Kent 4-H President

Dairy Club Achievement Day
The C-K 4-H Dairy Club Achievement Day was held September 11th at the Highgate Fairgrounds.  Special thanks to Jim Clark, Rob Clark, Ken Scott and Agris Muikirk for helping make our Achievement Day a success.  The weather was beautiful, the kids were smiling and the calves enjoyed the sunshine.  Brian Haggins from Essex was our official judge for the day, sharing his expertise with the kids.  Congratulations to all our of our dairy members who participated in our regional joint virtual dairy meetings with Elgin, Middlesex and Wentworth.  We also had members from Alberta participate in the club!

Jeff Atkinson Memorial Scholarship

Ian Lawton was the 2021 recipient of the Jeff Atkinson Memorial Scholarship. The family of Jeff Atkinson recently presented Ian with the bursary.

The family said that this scholarship is an effort to remember Jeff, to carry his legacy forward throughout the years and to help give someone else an opportunity to go after their future the way that Jeff pursued his. Atkinson was a metal fabricator, mechanic and farmer who volunteered with the Chatham-Kent 4H Plowing Club and the Chatham-Kent Plowmen’s Association.

Lawton will soon be heading to Guelph to attend the University of Guelph to study Agricultural Science. The scholarship is normally presented yearly at the Chatham-Kent Plowing Match banquet. It is open to a Chatham-Kent student pursuing post-secondary education in the area of agriculture and/or heavy equipment operation and maintenance. The recipient must also have been a 4-H member at any point during high school.

Watch FFCO's Twitter and Facebook feeds for photo contest details and invite others to participate by promoting the opportunity to win!
