TOWN OF BRIGHTON: RESIDENTS WEIGH IN ON PLANNING FOR THEIR HOMETOWN
Long-range planners from the MSD held a Brighton General Plan Kick-Off Workshop on July 22nd.

Many of the community members attended the open house - we counted about 58 attendees!  Those who came included full-time and part-time residents and major stakeholders.

The event was organized into three activities:
  1. Identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats found in Brighton (SWOT Analysis).
  2. Find and identify goals to achieve, preserve, avoid, or eliminate (APAE).
  3. Map it! - attendees put dots on a map to identify landmarks, favorite places, opportunities and unsafe or uncomfortable places.

Those who attended were asked to participate in an online survey. Participants learned about other opportunities to stay in touch or participate in future planning efforts.  If you are a resident of the Town of Brighton and you didn't get a chance to fill out the survey, here is a link: https://arcg.is/bie9q0  The survey will be open until the end of August.
MAGNA: TWO COMMUNITY WORK GROUPS FORMED
The MSD, in partnership with Salt Lake County Economic Development and Magna Township Council, are creating two working groups which will consist of Magna’s community & business leaders: The Magna Main Street Steering Committee and the Magna Economic Working Group. These groups will host a series of roundtable discussions on the state of Magna’s economy: the obstacles & opportunities of Magna’s business environment and how Magna Metro Township can help local businesses thrive.
  • Magna Main Street Steering Committee: will be comprised of Magna Main Street business owners/managers. The Steering Committee will discuss the obstacles and opportunities of doing business on Main Street and recommend five action items or initiatives that could strengthen Main Street and increase daily visitors/revenue (Examples: façade improvement program, streetlight banner program, digital marketing program). They will then conduct a cost-benefit analysis for these five action items and recommend funding from the Salt Lake County Redevelopment Agency (Magna Main Street is part of a Community Development Area [CDA], which is managed by the Salt Lake County Redevelopment Agency and allows tax increment to be reinvested into the area to enhance community and economic development opportunities along Main Street).
  •  Magna Economic Working Group: will be comprised of representatives from Magna’s largest employers, and will help the Magna Metro Township understand how to better support businesses in the following areas: Business Training, Workforce Development, Business Expansion, Community & Economic Development
There is no cost to join either group, meetings will be held in Magna (virtual options will be available), and both groups are aiming to start in August 2021. If you own a business in Magna, or know someone who does, join one of the groups by emailing tmandersen@slco.org, or call (801) 573-9918!
FIRST BRIGHTON DAYS HELD ON THE 24TH OF JULY
The Town of Brighton held its first-ever "Brighton Days" July 22-24.  MSD Planners invited community members to a General Plan Kick-off meeting, which was well attended by 58 full-time and part-time residents.

Friday evening, it was a bit chilly which was the perfect setting to watch a Warren Miller movie and have ice cream treats!

On the 24th of July 16 booths were set up on the south side of the Alpine Rose Lodge. There was live music and hamburgers cooking on the grill. Those who had booths at the event got to mix and mingle with Brighton residents, as well as the many people who were hiking the trail to Mary's Lake. Barbara Cameron, Town of Brighton Councilmember, provided a fun children's activity painting brightly colored rocks.
There were booths from the Town of Brighton Council, Community Council, Brighton Institute, moose information, leaf printing, Historical Society, rock painting, Engelmann Mountain School, Municipal Services District, beaver information, Camp Tuttle, Cottonwood Canyons Foundation, Wasatch Mountain Lodge, Unified Fire and Unified Police.

Later in the evening, Clive Romney entertained the crowd, and line dancing was offered by Seth Reid.

Congrats Brighton on a successful event!
GENERAL PLAN OPEN HOUSE WELL ATTENDED BY WHITE CITY RESIDENTS
Eastmont Elementary Auditorium was the place where community members gathered to learn about the general plan process.

Each person who came to the event was given a Passport to visit six different stations to learn about the content of the drafted General Plan. Participants who visited all six stations were entered in a drawing for a personalized White City street sign. The Santacruz family won the personalized street sign - congratulations!

There were about 76 residents who attended the meeting -- a great turnout!

The public hearing to consider the drafted General Plan will be held on September 23. The time and place will be determined soon. Please visit bit.ly/lrp-wc to learn more.

ROAD MAINTENANCE PROJECTS IN MAGNA
Salt Lake County Public Works Operations crews are resurfacing some streets in Magna with slurry seal asphalt the first few days in August.

The asphalt slurry will be applied to Magnolia Drive, Gardenia Avenue area, Sweetgum area, and Fetzer area. The project will last 4-5 days. The day before a street is scheduled to be closed, residents will be given notice and information explaining the process. Please watch for fliers placed on front doors for the exact location and time.

Slurry seal is a very economical surface treatment that prolongs the life of the asphalt by preventing water intrusion and oxidation from the sun.

If you have any questions or concerns, contact the MSD's contracted service provider, Salt Lake County Public Works, at (385) 468-6101 or email pwops-online@slco.org
