Oregon Legislature Passes Many New Investments in Behavioral Health

Oregon state legislators made systemic changes to health care this session, including a $474 million for the state’s behavioral health system. Of that, $130 million will boost housing and residential treatment for people with behavioral health needs. As well, $80 million will be made available for incentives to increase Oregon’s behavioral health care workforce. This includes programs such as scholarships and grants for providers to offer supervised clinical experience so professionals in training can qualify for licenses to practice psychology, marriage and family therapy, professional counseling and clinical social work. NAMD Executive Director and NRI Board Member Discusses Medicaid's Critical Role During Pandemic on C-SPAN

Virginia Closes Five Mental Health Institutions to New Patients Amid Crisis in Staffing

A National Mental Health Profile of Parents of Children With Medical Complexity

Among all parents, those with Children With Medical Complexity (CMC)are at the highest risk to report suboptimal mental health. They more often report that they do not know where to find community help, but they do say that they receive emotional support from health care providers and advocacy groups. Read more.

New Study: Within-Hospital Concordance of Opioid Exposure Diagnosis Coding in Mothers and Newborns

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently published a study measuring within-hospital concordance of mothers with opioid use disorder (OUD) and newborns with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) or opioid exposure (OE). Read more.

Telehealth Services Increased During Pandemic, but Age and Regional Disparities Exist

Telehealth visits accounted for nearly two-thirds of all mental health visits by patients enrolled in private insurance plans in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report published in Psychiatric Services in Advance. Read more.  

ADHD May Develop in Children Following Severe TBI

Children who experience a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) appear to be at greater risk of developing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) than children who experience less severe injuries, reports a meta-analysis published in JAMA Pediatrics. Read more.

Examining Unique Substance-Related Risk Profiles for Neglectful Behaviors Among Parents With and Without Clinical Depression

New research shows that parental substance use disorder (SUD) is one of the predominant parental risk factors observed for child neglect. Read more

Risk for Alcohol Use/Misuse Among Entering College Students: The Role of Personality and Stress

A recent study shows that the Neuroticism—Depression facet is a better predictor of alcohol use/misuse than the Neuroticism domain, even when accounting for stress and other personality domains. Read more
