Ashley Toney is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Human Sciences (Nutrition and Health Sciences) advised by Dr. Amanda Ramer-Tait and Dr. Virginia Chaidez. She will be defending her dual specialization in Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition as well as Community Nutrition and Health Promotion. Originally from Wilmington, CA, Ashley attended the University of California, Davis where she received her Bachelor’s in Nutrition Science with a minor in Comparative Literature.
At UNL, Ashley aims to address health disparities in underserved populations using interdisciplinary approaches that combine basic science discoveries with community research interests. In the laboratory, she investigates how red raspberry polyphenols and their gut microbiota-derived metabolites, the urolithins, attenuate obesity-related diseases using a variety of mouse models. In the community, she focuses on community health workers as the bridge between participant and researcher using the social ecological model as a framework.
