                   Lotus Deck Project Update

Most of the "bubble" was taken off toward the end of July so the deck would be open to the lake view for upcoming events.   Our deck project continued with the decking replacement in the aft section completed. Volunteer carpenter and Lotus supporter, Ben, started the work in late May and it wrapped up with carpenters Michael and Indy finishing the aft section fir decking and plywood cover in mid-July.  We'll resume the work in the Fall.  This project is a major undertaking for our small organization, and we are grateful to have received partial funding for the project through a Heritage Capital Project grant from the State of Washington. But we still need your donations to help with our 33% grant match requirement!   And if you donate soon, you'll be added to the guest list for our special "Lotus Supporter" tea later in August.  We appreciate your support!

Lodging Available On-Board

Our summer lodging season is heating up!  A big shout-out to Lotus friends Marcella and Jason who were our first guests aboard this year, and have already stayed twice!  This is a fun way to help support Lotus - book one of our delightful staterooms for a stay on Lake Union, near the heart of downtown Seattle. We have five rooms available - two rooms with two bunk beds apiece (great for kids), two Queen rooms with a bathroom just across the hall, and the Master Stateroom with a private bath.  Check out the staterooms on our Webpage (see link above).

A Bit of Lotus History

At three o'clock on the afternoon of July 11, 1909, the MV Lotus began her first journey.  On board that afternoon were 5 members of the McMicken family, along with 3 friends, and 4 crew members. The first leg of the trip took them to Kingston, where they anchored for the night and some of the group went fishing, returning with 25 sole.

Written by Annie and Joseph Pyle, friends on board for the trip, the log is a wonderful account of that first trip and all the side excursions they took on their way to Lund, British Columbia.  They reached that destination on July 28 and then headed south back to Seattle, arriving on August 4.  The leather-bound book comes complete with a poem "The Ballad of the Lotus".  Ask to see it the next time you come for a tour!
