Controversial Auckland businessman Leo Molloy has announced his intention to run for Auckland Mayor in 2022, Newshub reports. He has already outlined his plans to clear out the council and crack down on "woke pretentious white whinging wankers." Molloy, who owns the popular bar-cum-restaurant HeadQuarters, has cultivated a reputation as a contentious character, making numerous headlines over the years for his caustic takes on Labour Party politicians, veganism, and media personalities.

At least 168 jobs to be affected as University of Auckland proposes restructure

At least 168 jobs are at stake in the event a restructure of student services goes ahead as planned at the University of Auckland, Newshub reveals. The university, however, assures it'll create just as many roles as it's getting rid of. A consultation document reveals 168.46 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions are set to be disestablished across faculties, academic services, and communications and marketing. Nevertheless, another 172.04 FTE jobs will be created if the restructure goes ahead. University of Auckland also said it will follow a redeployment process for impacted staff.

Two south Auckland vaccination centres run dry of vaccines

Two south Auckland vaccinations centres ran out of Covid-19 vaccines, Stuff reports, leaving pre-booked patients waiting or being turned away. Both the Highbrook and Tamaki vaccination centres ran out of vaccines for a few hours early Tuesday afternoon, the Ministry of Health’s vaccine programme general manager of logistics Ian Costello confirmed. Costella said that people waiting at the vaccination centres were “well looked after” by staff, who provided refreshments. “We’d like to thank people who had to wait for their vaccinations or reschedule their appointments for their patience.’

Eli Epiha pleads guilty to murdering Auckland police officer Matthew Hunt

The man who shot and killed Constable Matthew Hunt at a routine traffic stop in west Auckland in 2020, has pleaded guilty to his murder, Newshub reports. Eli Bob Sauni Epiha pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing injury, after fleeing police and hitting a pedestrian on Reynella Dr that same day. Epiha, 25, appeared at the Auckland High Court for the alleged attempted murder of another police officer who was at the scene, Constable David Goldfinch, a charge Epiha denies and has pleaded not guilty to.

RSV death: Auckland mum dies suddenly after virus complication

A 63-year-old Auckland woman has died after contracting RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), NZ Herald reports. The mum, described by her loved ones as a community advocate with a beautiful smile, died at her Stanmore Bay home on Wednesday morning after being discharged from North Shore Hospital on Monday. It is unclear if it was the highly contagious virus that killed her as she was battling other health conditions. The family asked not to be named out of respect.

Auckland prison escape day 14: 'I take my hat off to him', says jailbreak artist

Prisoner rights advocate and serial jailbreaker, Arthur Taylor, believes Te Ariki Poulgrain's escape from custody was a pre-planned effort rather than a chance dash for freedom, Stuff reports. Taylor is pleased that Poulgrain, 23, has not hurt anyone during his time on the run. Poulgrain, who remains at large, broke free while attending a scheduled appointment at the Auckland University optometry clinic in Park Rd, on the afternoon of June 30.

Auckland landlord who called tenant a 'bloody Māori' to pay $8900 in damages

A tribunal has ruled that an Auckland landlord harassed his tenant by using derogatory language against him, calling him a “bloody Māori”, Stuff reports. The former tenant of an Auckland property, who had his identity suppressed by the Tenancy Tribunal, was awarded almost $9000 after his landlord let him live in an unlawful rental, forbade him from having guests over, and made offensive comments about his race. The tenancy lasted about 14 weeks, from November 2020 to February 2021.

More buses, new lanes in Auckland Transport's 10-year plan

More services and new bus lanes form part of a new plan to improve bus travel into Auckland in the next 10 years, Stuff reports. The City Centre Bus Plan, which aims to prioritise the city centre as a "place for people," was revealed by Auckland Transport on Monday. The plan will establish two bus lanes on Customs Street, Fanshawe Street and Wellesley Street, and claims it will boost the capacity of the network by 50%. AT will seek public feedback on the plan until September 19.

Watercare set to take an additional 50 million litres of water a day from the Waikato River

A new $145 million Watercare water treatment plant in Tūākau will go live from Wednesday, providing Auckland with up to 50 million litres of water a day from the Waikato River, Stuff reports. The facility is part of a $224 million package approved by Auckland Council last year to boost the city’s water supply as part of its drought recovery. Watercare chief executive Jon Lamonte said the new plant will provide a safety net for the city in case the weather is drier than forecasters predict.

Covid-19: Stolen vaccine freezer component recovered from Auckland scrap metal yard

A critical component of an Auckland Covid-19 vaccine freezer, which would have been big enough to store five million doses of vaccine, has been recovered after allegedly being stolen over the weekend, Stuff reports. Two people were caught on camera taking the component from a business in Auckland’s Penrose. The business owner, who picked the component up from police on Tuesday afternoon, said, “[The alleged thieves] sold it to a scrap metal yard who saw the news on Saturday and let us know.”
